What exactly is considered false testimony? I know it sounds pretty self-explanatory, but there is room for gray.
False Testimony?

I would say it is when someone knowingly testify about something to be truth, that he/she knows is not.
You mentioned gray areas and I think it will fall under, giving false testimony unknowingly, when believing something to be true when it is not.
Hope it helped some, even if I was using my legal reference as guideline I feel it is applicable to spiritual matters as well.

It kinda reminds me of what a sister in Christ shared in my fellowship group.
She said, "Read the bible and know it well. Because there is only one truth. There can be so many forms of false and you can't know them all. But if you KNOW THE ONE TRUTH, you can distinguish what is NOT TURE."

I assume you are talking of spiritual truth. Two tests come quickly to mind:
1) Does the testimony bring glory to God?
2) Is it plainly supported by Scripture?
If the testimony fails both of these tests, it is false testimony.

Rizen- Here's the reason why I ask. A few months ago I was prophesized to that I would be a prophet for God. So throughout the past few months, God has been putting little things in my heart here and there... telling certain people certain things. I follow instruction and do so. These are all things that are according to his will and according to scripture (like SLE asked). But then the enemy with his sneaky little ways puts thoughts in my head like "was that really God or did it come really come from you?"
By no means do I want to say things are from God when they are not so that's why I'm being really careful that I'm not giving false testimony. However, I know what God's Spirit feels like and on numerous occasions, I'll tell someone something and they will say to me "I was just thinking that or just praying that".
I'm just being extra careful I'm not doing something wrong

In my church we are taught that when we think we have a message from God for another person, we should approach that person humbly and say something like, "This may be from God or it may be just from my brain, but, this is what I think God is saying to you..............."
And after you've delivered the message, if the person is uncertain about the issue, encourage him/her to pray for discernment to figure out whether or not it is from the Lord.That way your butt is covered if the message does turn out to be from your brain.

Vs 1: Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.
Vs 2: This is the way to find out if they have the Spirit of God: If a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ became a human being, that person has the Spirit of God.
Vs 3: If a prophet does not acknowledge Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist. You have heard that he is going to come into the world, and he is already here. NLT
I'm sure that we can relate these verses to a testimony too.

I presume that TrulyBlessed was refering to testimony about the Lord, His disciples, or His works. Anytime someone makes any sort of statement about any of these and the statement is patently untrue, and the speaker knows it is untrue when he/she speaks it, that person is guilty of giving false testimony.
While the verses you note are centered on false prophets, false witness includes, but is not limited to, prophesy. Since a lie is always aimed at deceiving one or more persons, the 9th Commandment applies - "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." (Ex 20:16)
