Fasting?

I was just wondering if someone could fill me in on the practice of fasting? Such as, where is it supported in scripture, why it is supported in scripture and how do we implement it into our lifes? It is my understanding that deep prayer and focus on God are done while fasting. How does fasting help us to do those things more effectivley? Or is it simply a symbolic guesture to the Lord?
