“Are not five sparrows sold for two [a] copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7 NKJV
In the late 1970s, rocker Bob Seger’s “Feel Like a Number” lamented the depersonalization of human beings. “I got the idea for the song after watching a show about computer banks and how many names were in them,” he said. “It’s about identity and trying to survive.”
And that was years before the internet, before your every web search was tracked by a multi-digit IP address, every purchase identified by your fifteen-or sixteen-digit credit card number. We simply can’t avoid being a number.
Unless…we’re part of God’s family through faith in Jesus Christ. Sure, God is numbering our hairs—a relatively easy job with many of us. But the awesome Creator who “brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name” (Isaiah 40:26) also knows exactly who His children are. Jesus, having described Himself as the good shepherd, said He “calls his own sheep by name” (John 10:3). And someday, He’ll even give each of us a new name, “known only to the one who receives it” (Revelation 2:17).
You’re not just a number. You’re a completely known, much-loved son of God
Prayer: Lord, thank You for paying such deep, personal attention to me.
