LORD, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you. Psalm 130:3-4 NLT

Toward the end of summer break, college student in Chicagoland joined his parents on the deck of their home and handed them a four-page handwritten letter. In the letter, he detailed all of the ways he had sinned against the Lord and his parents.

When they finished reading the letter, the father stood up, walked over to the propane barbeque grill, put the letter inside, lit the fire, and erased all record of his son's wrongdoings. Then he and his wife hugged their son and shed tears of grief and joy. Beyond words, the college student knew all was forgiven.

Years later, that same father wrote a one-page letter to his wife. In it, he confessed that he had looked at online pornographic videos for less than ten minutes. After his wife read the letter, she walked onto the deck, sent it up in smoke, embraced her husband, and said how proud she was that he was a godly man.

It doesn't have to involve a gas barbeque grill and fire, but what is your family's way of offering forgiveness when a spouse, child, or parent confesses his or her sins?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for how completely You forgive my sins. May I fear You even more and extend godly forgiveness to my loved ones.
