Websters Dictionary defines Fornication as...

fornication

noun

for·ni·ca·tion ˌfȯr-nə-ˈkā-shən

Synonyms of fornication
: consensual (see consensual sense 2) sexual intercourse between two persons not married to each other compare adultery

What’s the difference between adultery and fornication?

In case you were wondering, the words adultery and adult are not etymologically related (in other words, adultery didn’t grow out of adult in the way that punditry grew out of pundit). Although both words come from Latin and share the same first five letters, adultery is from adulterāre (“to pollute, defile, commit adultery”), a word formed ultimately from the Latin elements ad- “to, near” and alter “other.” English adult comes from adultus, which is the past participle of the Latin word adolescere (“to grow up”).

In legal use there is a difference between adultery and fornication. Adultery is only used when at least one of the parties involved (either male or female) is married, whereas fornication may be used to describe two people who are unmarried (to each other or anyone else) engaging in consensual sexual intercourse.

Dictionary.com gives a similar definition, in fact, all of the first 10 definitions in a google search are virtually identical.

Put simply, it's two people who aren't married, who are having sex together.

Fornication can also be used in a spiritual sense. The Bible talks about fornication when people went after other gods, and worshiped idols.

Acts 15:20 but that we write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood.
Acts 15:29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell."
Acts 21:25 "But concerning the Gentiles who have believed, we wrote, having decided that they should abstain from meat sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and from fornication."

1Cor 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
Heb 13:4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Sex between unamrried people has become so common-place, so accepted by society. Every television show, every song, every movie, quite a few books,
seem to be about sex between two unmarried people. But of course just because it's accepted by society, doesn't mean it's accepted by God.

Rom 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,
Rom 6:16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

Rom 13:13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.

1Thes 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;
1Thes 4:8 So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you.

Ya ca take it a bit deeper to laying aside I believe is about the same as abstaining don't ya think??

1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

1Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious

Idk I see it as stripping away the world bit by bit..

You wrote: "Put simply, it's two people who aren't married, who are having sex together."

I would agree and go on to point out that in the context of the Bible, and the Christian faith, marriage means M-F, not gay marriage. Therefore the persons who can commit fornication are of the opposite sex from each other.

The other thing I'd mention from your OP is your quote of 1 Cor. 6:9 -

"1Cor 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,"

There are four distinct sinners mentioned here: fornicators, adulterers, effeminate & homosexuals, so it seems clear that "fornicators" are distinguished from adulterers, effeminate and homosexuals, or better "sodomites".

Some I've read use the term "sexual immorality" as an umbrella term and then insert homosexuals under that term. That can't be because the rather meaningless term "sexual immorality" is with accuracy, "fornication".

When you review the occurrences of "fornication" and "fornicators" in Scripture where the genders are indicated, it is always opposite sexes, not same sex. The biblical usage of a word takes precedence over a lexicon definition.

It has become so commonplace in American TV and movies, to include gay or straight sex scenes as if it is proper and commonplace to have sex in any promiscuous manner. I've begun watching Asian TV-series and movies, often Korean, to avoid this sexual garbage found in our current American productions. In addition, I find the Asian and Korean productions more respectful of religious beliefs, and the name of God the Father and Jesus are not profaned and used in blasphemous ways as in the US media.

On a side note, the top selling bible in the world is the NIV. It removed all mention of the word 'fornication" in it.

Rockerduck, your remark prompted me to check the 1989 NRSV NT with the 2021 NRSVue NT. The NRSV uses some form of fornication 30 times, but the word is not used at all in the 2021 NRSVue. I had not noticed that change before. The only change I had been aware of was the NRSVue on 1 Cor. 6:9 and 1 Tim. 1:10. The only reason I can think of for that is, the influence of culture.

Yes, its the culture, the woke culture, that is watering down the Word of God. All modern translations keep "updating", which leads it down the culture path of pacification.

@B-A-C

Sometimes playing around with English definitions within an English translation is a snipe hunt.

But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication (G4202 - πορνεία -porneia), and from things strangled, and from blood.
(Acts 15:20 KJV)

For which I provide a LINK to the Liddell Scott Lexicon for πορνεία
A. prostitution

(Not to invalidate the other points you have made....)

Absurd. You cannot make up special "Bible Word" definitions and then back read them into the culture of two thousand years ago.

That's what happened with the NIV. They made their own dictionary to support their own theological bias.
