For exaltation [comes] neither from the east Nor from the west nor from the south. But God [is] the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another. Psalm 75:6-7 NKJV
We men tend to like recognition. If we’ve accomplished something of note, we want others to notice it and call us out by name. And if we’re successful in our jobs, we feel that we deserve a promotion.
Today’s scripture verses, however, tell us that God is the one who exalts. The psalmist Asaph was teaching the proud (and reminding the humble) that their success and exaltation come from the Lord, not as a result of their own ambition and initiative.
If you are successful, even by human standards, it’s a good idea to avoid boasting but instead humbly thank God for what you’ve been able to accomplish. That is part of what the apostle James was getting at when he wrote, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:7).
God isn’t against success or accomplishment. But always remember that whatever good things you enjoy in this life are from His generous hand.
Prayer: Father in heaven, You are in control of all things, including my life circumstances and any success I enjoy. I humbly submit myself to You so that You may do with me as You will.
