Generation of Jesus?

In Matthew1, the bible talks about the generation of Jesus and in verse16, it says, And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Ok, here is my question. The generation of David connects to Joseph not Mary. Joseph was just her fiance and she was empregnanted by the holy spirit which means Joseph is not related to Jesus. So, does this mean Jesus is not really from the generation of David? If not, whose is he?

After studying about the generation of Jesus and that of Joseph I believe I've come to the conclusion that the genealogy in Matthew 1 is that of Jesus through Mary. The one of Joseph is in Luke 3:23-38. Both Mary and Joseph were decendents of David by different fathers, so it can be confusing at times. At the same time Jesus was born of the Holy Ghost as you mentioned above. I hope this helped and thank you for giving me a good reason to do a little research!

Inmatthew1:16, it says jacob begat joseph. It doesn't say how Mary is conected to the generation of David.
In Luke6:23, it says joseph was the son of Heli.... now this is confusing:)

I'm not sure maybe it's referring to 2 different Josephs but it doesn't seem like it. Hummmmm.... Well maybe I'll ask my dad he should know.

He Said It!

God's ways are not our ways, amen. God spoke thru the prophets a savior will be born thru the line of David his servant. Look at Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Pince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon the kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgement and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The seal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Praise God!

Interesting question… I too noticed these confusing passages, but I didn’t ask myself many questions about them… I saw this post as an opportunity to gain some insight on this on my own and, maybe, to be of some help for you too…
One thing to observe is that the 2 genealogies listed aren’t the same. There are way more differences than just Joseph’s father. In fact, from David to Jesus they’re totally different. In Mathew, we see Jesus’ line of descendants through Solomon, and in Luke through Nathan, both of them sons of David.
One other thing… In Mathew, all people listed there “begot” their sons, except Joseph. So it’s clear that Jesus isn’t the natural son of Joseph. In Luke, the author says that Jesus was – “as supposed” – the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat… I read in a book that in Greek, “the son of Joseph” is different in writing than the other forms of “the son of Heli, the son of Matthat…”. “The son of Joseph” is written using an undefined article. All other similar expression (“the son of xxx”) are used with an defined article. So many scholars believe that Joseph wasn’t the son of Heli, but his son-in-law. Thus they also believe that this genealogy isn’t Joseph’s, but Mary’s. The reason that Joseph is listed instead of Mary, is that women’s names weren’t usually listed in genealogies. This would solve in a way the problem of differences between Mathew and Luke. Also, if you look further down in Luke 3:31, you can see that Mary was the daughter of David. So Jesus is indeed, the son of David, even though Joseph was just his adoptive father.

Hope to have been helpful… :-)

Thank you Sebi ! I myself was going to look more into this topic (still will ) thanks for the info.

Sebi,
