“Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NASB1995)

If you look up this word “rejoice” in the Greek Interlinear, you should discover that this word “rejoice” has to do with experiencing and delighting in God’s grace. And if you look up the word “grace,” you should learn that God’s grace refers to God freely extended to give himself away to people. And how did he do this? By sending Jesus Christ (God the Son) to die on a cross to put our sins to death with him, and to be resurrected from the dead on the third day, so that, by God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in him, we can now die with Christ to sin and walk in obedience to his commands.

For the grace of God, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for Jesus’ return. For Christ “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (See Titus 2:11-14; Ephesians 2:8-10)

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

Therefore, we should always be thankful to God for his grace to us in sending his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to put our sins to death with him, so that we can now live free from slavery (bondage, addiction) to sin, and walk daily in obedience to our Lord in holy living, in living lives which are pleasing to our Lord. Because of God’s grace to us we can live free from the control of sin over our lives, in the power of God, in being the people of God he created us to be in doing what he has called us to do. And that is a cause for much rejoicing, for there is no better life than this!

And prayer is not just a formality where you schedule a specific time each day to go through a list of prayer requests and bring them to the throne of grace. Prayer that is to be without ceasing is 24/7 open communication between us and our Lord (two-way) to where our hearts and ears are tuned in to hearing his voice and to following him wherever he leads us in doing whatever he wants us to do, and to where we can speak with him anytime of the day or night regardless of whatever else we have going on. So we can pray while cooking a meal or driving a car or doing laundry, etc.

And when this says to give thanks in everything, it means we are to be thankful to God in good times and in bad times, when we are being treated well, and when we are being mistreated and persecuted, when we are healthy, and when we are ill, and when we are sorrowful and crying, and when we are happy and rejoicing. We are to be thankful when we have little and when we have plenty, when things go the way we had hoped, and when they do not. And we should praise and thank the Lord always for saving us, for choosing us, and for using us in his service, all glory to God!!

[Titus 2:11-14; Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 3:23-25; Romans 5:1-2; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 2 Corinthians 6:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:8; Ephesians 6:24; Hebrews 10:26-31; Hebrews 12:12-17; 1 Peter 2:24]

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” Acts 16:25 NIV ‘84

Lord, I praise You forevermore.
You, my Savior, I now adore.
Hope in heaven awaiting me,
Because You died at Calvary.

I have been forgiven,
And I’m bound for heaven.
Jesus set me free from
All my sin, I say.
I will praise Him always!

Lord, I love You for all You’ve done:
Overcame death, my vict’ry won!
Jesus saved me, and now I’m free!
I rejoice in His love for me.

I will walk in vict’ry!
My sin is but hist’ry!
I am free to please Him
With my life today.
I will love Him always!

Lord, I thank You for giving me
A new life bought at Calvary.
Loving Jesus, I meet with Him.
Tender mercies now flow within.

Lord, I am so thankful;
Through my Lord, I’m able
To sit at His table;
Fellowship with Him.
I will thank Him always!
