While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. "I tell you the truth," Jesus said, "this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has." Luke 21:1-4 NLT
Jesus directed His followers’ attention to a poor widow who had dropped her last two coins into the temple collection box—and contrasted her sacrifice with those who gave only their surplus. “This poor widow has given more than all the rest of them,” He said.
Jesus commended this impoverished widow for giving everything she had. Hers was a huge financial sacrifice (it was everything she had), but there’s a principle here beyond the giving of money—as important as that is. God wants us to dedicate everything we have—our money, our time, our mental energy…everything—to glorify Him and to bring others into His eternal kingdom.
Prayer: Father in heaven, even when I don’t have much to give, You still see my sacrifices to You. May I always be faithful to give You all I have, even when what I have to give seems relatively small and insignificant. May I always find encouragement in knowing that You always see when I give of what little I have.
