The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. Psalm 19:1-2 NLT
In 1997-98, we earth dwellers were treated to a spectacular nighttime display in Comet Hale-Bopp, one of the brightest comets seen from earth for many decades. Hale-Bopp, also known as the Great Comet of 1997, was visible to the naked eye for a record eighteen months. What a sight it was!
Since about four thousand comets have been discovered in our solar system, it’s not out of the question that David observed one of them and was in such awe that he was moved to write the words in the above scripture verses. What seems sure is that he looked skyward during a clear night in Israel and saw what we can see today: countless stars, planets, and other celestial bodies—all placed there by the Creator’s hand.
Would you like to catch a glimpse of God’s magnificence and glory? Just step outside…then look up.
Prayer: Almighty Creator, sometimes all I have to do to appreciate Your greatness is step outside, look up, and see the magnificent beauty of the heavens You created. Thank You for showing me Your greatness in what You’ve created.
