"I dwell.......with him that is of a contrite and humble spirit. - Isaiah 57 : 15
What an amazing statement! That the indescribably glorious and holy Being......whom time and space cannot contain, and in whose sight the heavens are not clean, condecends to dwell with man! It would be the pinnacle of presumption were we to assert such a thing, but it is God Himself who declares it! And He does declare it!
The intention of this whole verse is to bring home to us.......you and I.......this stupendous fact, that God dwells with us,...with men. But we read that God dwells with a certain kind of man......."him that is of a contrite and humble spirit" God dwells with the person who has grasped something of the majesty and holiness of God.........by whom....through Jesus... all their sins have been forgiven.......... and they are utterly crushed and broken in spirit....(for that is what 'contrite' means) ........they cannot get down low enough before him....(for that is what 'humble' means)
In this verse God Almighty pledges Himself to visit.......no..."to dwell"....with those whose hearts fulfill these conditions. "The tender heart, ....the broken and contrite spirit, ....are to me great joy" wrote Charles Simeon, Fellow of Kings College Cambridge.........."I long to be in my proper place before God, ........my hand on my mouth.......and my mouth in the dust"
Before all then....let us cry unto Him to give us,.........'a broken and contrite heart',.... in the light of all that He has done........for us.
Thankyou Jesus
Amen
