Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness. Psalm 115:1 NLT

Contemporary Christian music fans of a certain age might recognize today’s scripture as the inspiration for a song by the Imperials. The 1985 recording drew its refrain from a psalm that graphically portrays God’s superiority to idols.

Unbelievers in the psalmist’s day—as in ours—were asking, “Where is their God?” (Psalm 115:2). The answer was stark: “our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes” (v. 3).

Some were bowing to so-called gods of precious metal, formed by human hands. The idols had mouths, but couldn’t speak a single word; eyes, but couldn’t see the midday sun; ears, but couldn’t hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant. “Those who make idols are just like them,” the psalm writer declared, “as are all who trust in them” (Psalm 115:8). In other words, they were blind, deaf, and dumb, spiritually speaking.

Happily, we know the truth. The one true God is in heaven, overseeing the world He created. He is actively working for the benefit of those who put their faith in Jesus Christ. He surpasses any man-made “god” by orders of infinity. And that is why all glory goes to Him alone.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may I never glory in myself, my possessions, or my achievements. May I always direct every bit of praise to You.
