The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
Some people imagine God to be a bearded, stoic figure who sits upon His heavenly throne with a look of mild indignation on His holy face. This image shows up in pop culture, but it casts God in entirely the wrong light. Read today’s verse again.
God’s rescue plan is in motion. He’s rejoicing over you with gladness! He is exulting over you with loud singing! This is not a God with His nose turned up at humanity’s sin, but a God who takes great joy in saving His people.
Tonight marks the final night before we celebrate how God came physically into the world—how He was literally in the midst of His people. As wonderful as the incarnation is, it is secondary to the fact that He is still in our midst today.
As you sing Christmas carols and celebrate Jesus’ birth, know that God is singing over you as well. He is still mighty to save and rejoicing over the fact that you are in His midst through the Holy Spirit. Do you feel His presence? Sing along with the Almighty One!
Prayer: Father, may we sing in harmony. Thank You for rescuing me!
