But Moab, my washbasin, will become my servant, and I will wipe my feet on Edom and shout in triumph over Philistia." Psalm 108:9 NLT
In the New Living Translation of the Bible, 2 Samuel 8 is headlined “David’s Military Victories.” The eleventh and twelfth verses of this chapter indicate that Israel’s greatest king had conquered the three nations mentioned in the verse above: he dedicated to God “silver and gold from the other nations he had defeated—from Edom, Moab, Ammon, Philistia, and Amalek.;”
The future tense of the verbs in Psalm 108:9 indicates God had not yet given David victory over these enemies, though some commentators speculate that Edom, Moab, and Philistia were rising again after previous military setbacks. Whatever the case may be, take special note of God’s ultimate power to punish His enemies and preserve His own.
Three thousand years after David wrote these words, his descendants continue as a distinct people group, many of the them in a prosperous modern nation named Israel. Christians, who trace their heritage through the biblical Jews, now number in the hundreds of millions, if not billions. Edomites, Moabites, and Philistines—their skeletons, at least—are found only in dusty archaeological digs.
Never doubt God’s ability to see you through the hardships you face. The road may not be easy, but the Lord will fulfill His promises to you just as He did to David, Moab, Edom, and Philistia.
Prayer: Lore, lead me to victory like You led David.
