But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:8 NKJV
With three kids—including a teenage boy eating truckloads of food—Eddie found that his salary barely covered his expenses. He sought out odd jobs, and even picked up flattened aluminum cans and returnable beverage containers on his morning walks. The kids were embarrassed, but hey—even a few extra bucks helped. As they say, “You do what you have to do.”
When the apostle Paul wrote Timothy about providing for relatives, he was referencing poor widows. Some people, neglecting their own families, expected the church to step in with resources. Paul had strong words for them, as you read above. That was a specific issue in a particular time and place—but the fact that it’s in our Bible highlights a principle for us.
Like Eddie, maybe you’re scraping up random dollars for your family’s needs. Or perhaps you have plenty of money—the issue is the time and attention you give to your own. Either way, God calls you to provide for your household.
Ask Him if there’s anything more you should do. Then trust Him to provide the resources with His answer. Never forget that God’s commands are accomplished in His strength.
Prayer: Father, I need Your help to provide for my household. Please give me wisdom energy, and resources to honor them and You.
