God Showed Me Your Picture Today - August 31, 2006
I was just about done with our grocery shopping around 10:30 one morning when we came up the bread aisle where those round Cuban crackers are displayed and I saw this tall, white-haired elderly man putting his crackers in his cart. As he lifted his head and his eyes could see beyond the brim of his faded baseball cap, he saw my daughter Cynthia who was 18 months old at the time. A gleaming smile immediately came across his face.
In the sweetness of a doting grandfather's voice in a heavy Cuban accent he said, "Oh, hello bebe." Simultaneously he reached for the photo keychain hanging from a belt loop on his hip. He showed us the pictures of three well-dressed kids telling us each of their names and ages adding there is now a three-month old too. When I said his grandchildren were beautiful he chuckled and said, "These are my great gran children I ave sis'teen."
He stood a little taller and pinched his thumb to his fingers in a pointing gesture and said, "You know everything my father said to me was perfect." And he put his fingers to his mouth blowing a kiss. "But I really love this thing he told me. He said, 'a couple without children is like a garden without flowers. Children are a gift from God.'"
Can you imagine saying that everything your Dad has told you was PERFECT? But it's true- everything our Father in Heaven has said was and is perfect. Can you imagine that your great grandfather could have been so proud of you even if you were just one of 16 that he would instantly whip your picture out to show two strangers, one of whom can't even speak or understand? Then can you imagine that's how God feels about each one of us? EACH ONE OF US! He loves us so much that He has our picture dangling from His belt loop where He can easily look at it. It's like I saw each of our pictures cradled in His hand.
He loved us so much he sent the boy in the first picture, the most prized son, to earth to live with us, teach us, and then die for our sins so that we could be forgiven and live forever in Heaven with our Father God.
May all who read this know the blessings of God and gladly share His love with others even strangers in a grocery store.
