How do you know if you are one of God's elect? Is every Christian one of the elect or only certain Christians? What does it mean to be the elect?
Jesus said, for many are called (invited) but few are chosen (elected).
Everyone is invited to know God through the creation of the world.
We are called (invited) to preach the gospel to every living creature. So we are supposed to invite everyone.
This selection from Colossians describes God's elect:
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Do you possess these qualities? It would suggest that you are one of God's elect.
Peter wrote to God's elect that were gentile believers and described them for us:
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
They were elect through sanctification of the spirit which brought them to being obedient unto God and they were given the blood of Jesus to cleanse them.
If this is what is happening to you, then you are probably Gods elect.
Peter also taught that a mans election needed to be made sure:
1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Have you been adding these qualities to your faith or are you one who has forgotten that you were purged of your old sins?
One last true test for Gods elect is persecution:
10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
All people bearing the name Christian fall into one of two categories. Those who live godly lives and those who do not which includes both unbelievers and believers who are uncircumcised in heart. Those that live godly are persecuted by those who do not. In the end, brother will deliver brother unto death. The above from 2 Timothy is within the context of the perilous days that are prophesied that I am convinced we live in. I have chosen to cleave to the word of God and suffer whatever reproach will come my way that I might save some. I believe with all my heart that I am of Gods elect and am being conformed to the image of his dear Son who will rule over me for ever and ever in a new heaven and earth wherein righteousness dwells. I hope that you are there with me that we might serve one another together in harmony forever. God the Father has promised to come and dwell with us and be God over us with Jesus being subject unto him.
In Jesus Name,
Gary
