"Surely The Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His Plan to His servants the prophets." (Amos 3:7)

The English word prophet is used to translate the Old Testament Hebrew word pronounced naw-bee, meaning inspired seer, and the New Testament Greek word pronounced prof-ay-tace, meaning an inspired speaker (inspired being an abbreviation of in-spirit-ed).

Unlike the numerous false prophets that existed throughout Bible History, and continue to exist through our time and beyond (see The Great False Prophet), God's true prophets were always sent directly by Him to deliver His message, not their own e.g. "do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but The Spirit of your Father speaking through you." (Matthew 10:19-20 RSV).

God's prophets did not live easy lives. Most were persecuted, ridiculed, often living in grave danger for their lives, and nearly all were ignored - until it was too late. The message of God's true prophets was not, and will not be, well received by most people. If it was, there would be little need for a prophet in the first place. Usually, their purpose was to warn and reprimand a very sinful and unrepentant people to stop doing what they were doing before it was too late.

Fully 17 of the Old Testament's 39 books are classified as prophetic: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. All of the other 22 books are also filled with prophecy. Elijah and Elisha were two of the most powerful prophets of that time (see Why Elijah?).

The New Testament is also filled with Prophecy. Beginning with John The Baptist, a prophet whose own coming was prophesied by an earlier prophet over 700 years before (Isaiah 40:3-5), the Gospels, Acts, epistles, and Revelation are filled with prophecy for our time now.

The Greatest Prophet Of All

Jesus Christ, while being the focus of prophecy, was Himself a prophet. His "Olivet Prophecy" describes what is just over the horizon for all the world now:

"Jesus left the Temple and was going away, when His disciples came to point out to Him the buildings of the Temple. But He answered them, "You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down." (Note: This prophecy was fulfilled, 40 years later, exactly as The Lord said it would, when the Roman Legions devastated Jerusalem. See Fall of Jerusalem In 70 A.D. and Temples)
"As He sat on The Mount Of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the close of the age?"

"And Jesus answered them, "Take heed that no one leads you astray. For many will come in My Name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs." (see Earthquake!)

"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation, and put you to death; and you will be hated by all nations for My Name's sake. And then many will fall away, and betray one another, and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love will grow cold. But he who endures to the end will be saved. And this Gospel of The Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all Nations; and then the end will come." (see What Is A Saint? and Apostasy)

"So when you see the desolating sacrilege spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place, let the reader understand, then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; let him who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house; and let him who is in the field not turn back to take his mantle. And alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath." (see The Place To Watch, The Abomination of Desolation, Daniel's Statue and The Lawless One)

"For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. Then if any one says to you, 'Lo, here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. Lo, I have told you beforehand." (see False Christs and The Great False Prophet)

"So, if they say to you, 'Lo, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out; if they say, 'Lo, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of man. Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together." (see The Return Of Jesus Christ)

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; then will appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; and He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." (Matthew 24:1-31 RSV) (see Signs In The Heavens and The Elect)

I have a some questions. Yesterday a friend invited me to a church where the preacher claims to be a prophet and he has the title Apostle Dave.

I have to admit I never knew that there were modern day prophets or apostles. so I came home and looked up some stuff.

Am I right in understanding that a true prophet has to hear from God?

This man was ordained by some bishop as a prophet. And I just have never heard of someone calling himself an apostle, is it ok to give yourself a title of Apostle? He is also a member of ICA, an organization for apostles, or something of that nature. It just seems all very strange to me.

I also visited the church website and it is saying that anyone can hear from God, that they are trying to raise a company of prophets, Like it is something that can be taught.

This 'apostle Dave' also mentioned one of his prophetic accounts during the service and it had no relevance to the Easter celebration and was taking the focus of Jesus resurrection on to himself. And also to me his story seemed like he was a phsycic. It was at this point I began to feel uneasy and wanted to leave.

I felt a little sad, because I love my old church and their Easter services and the pastor was wonderful and the focus was always Jesus.

So if there are such modern day prophets and apostles, how can anyone tell the real thing?

Sister, listen to the Spirit within you. It's shouldn't be about man, it's all about Jesus. A true prophet will speak of Christ, he is there for Christ - not for himself.

That was a new organization to me Calluna, so I did a little quick surfing to see what the discernment websites were saying about them.
From what I gathered about the ICA - 'International Coalition of Apostles' - they are part of the Latter Rain/Kingdom Now theology which is deemed heresy.
For sure no man is made an apostle or prophet by his own will, or by the will of man, period. Any teaching that might even suggest otherwise, is completely lacking in any scriptural authority.

Maybe this website will help clarify some of this for you...

"The modern day prophet and apostle movement in the Church.
What is the Latter Rain teaching? Today a revival of the Latter Rain heresy ...has resurfaced and invaded the Church incorporating a paradigm shift in Christian ministries. What is it and who is involved? This section is to guide those who are not familiar (or are) with the terms and meanings of this new revivalism occurring inside the Church, and what will it mean to embrace these teachings"

John 10:14-17
14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father-and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
(from New International Version)

John 10:26-28
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
(from New International Version)

John 10:4-5
4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice."
(from New International Version)

As a Christian, hearing God's voice is not something special, nor is it something that only some get to experience. It is the most basic and fundamental part of your relationship with God.

Having said that, he speaks in many different ways, and that would make a good topic of discussion.

Richard, great post, one thing I would like to elaborate on is that Christ said that His sheep know His voice, but he didn't say His lambs do. Jesus told Peter at the end of the Gospel of John to feed His Lambs and then Feed His sheep.

Hearing the voice of the Good Shepard is one thing and recognizing it is another. Anyone who has ears can hear, but discerning the Voice of Christ is something more. Example; If we were to talk to each other by phone, at first you would probably not recognize my voice, but the more you listened to me the more familiar you will become with my voice and recognize it. So knowing the voice of the Good Shepard is something we grow into and we grow into it by listening to Him.

Now this leads us to an existing problem very prevelant in today's so called "church". The function of a prophet is not to be just the mouthpiece of God, but more importantly help those who are struggling with hearing and or identifying the voice of the Good Shepard. The gift of prophet in the new testament Church is that of restoration , restoring that which has been lost. The gift of prophet can assist the restoration of hearing, and can encourage one to grow in discerning the Lord's voice.

There is a lot more that can be said on this subject, but let's save it for another thread.

Thanks for the info. I listened to the Holy Spirit, and I won't be returning to this church.

Dreams, visions, signs and wonders, miracles, revelations, done by the holy ghost...is how God spoke to the people in bible times. And many signs and wonders were done by the apostles to give people faith in the Gospel, not themselves, except for fear of God reasons.

This is how God speaks 99% of the time to his people. If your worried about false prophets, then you shall know them by their fruits, for there will come false prophets, who will show great signs and wonders, but they will be lieing signs and wonders... and sooner or later they will be exposed to the elect, this will not be Benny Hinn nonscence...but real powerful prophets. Christ also said he would spare the elect from thier deceptions.

Act 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

Act 2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
Act 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

Edit: forgot to mention that God also speaks to people today by the gift of prophecy and holy ghost inspired speakers (ie leaders in the Church)

Good post Coconut...

God bless

Amen fellowservant, There was no record that Balaam ever gave a false prophecy (Numbers 22 &23) and Peter called him a false prophet because of his greedy deeds.(2Peter 2)

Well said, Jiggyfly. Thanks for identifying another reason that we should take a closer look at todays' so called "church".

It is refreshing to read your post as well, Fellowservant!
