Ok I have been chewing on this for a week now. Last thursday I was at a bible study where the leader of the study said we should not have a "hope so attitude" Well immediately that did not sit well with me. So I started looking in my bible for scripture about hope. Well I didn't want to appear rude (because it was brought to my attention that I was looking up scripture when others where listening). So I made a note to myself and when I got home I picked up the lesson that I was going to be substitute teaching for the Wednesday night class I go to and low and behold the scripture in that lesson also had hope in it... Praise the Lord!!! so here it is.
Rom 8:24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
Rom 8:25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it
I looked it up in strongs G1680
ἐλπίς
elpis
el-pece'
Fromἔλπω elpō which is a primary word (to anticipate, usually with pleasure); expectation (abstract or concrete) or confidence: - faith, hope.
I also looked up online the meaning
Main Entry: 1hope
Pronunciation: 'hOp
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): hoped; hop·ing
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English hopian; akin to Middle High German hoffen to hope
intransitive senses
1 : to cherish a desire with anticipation <hopes for a promotion>
2 archaic : TRUST
transitive senses
1 : to desire with expectation of obtainment
2 : to expect with confidence : TRUST
synonym see EXPECT
- hop·er noun
- hope against hope : to hope without any basis for expecting fulfillment
What has happened to hope then? What have we done to it's meaning?
By reading scripture and the meanings . We SHOULD have a hope so attitude! Are we not to cherish, trust, anticipate ? Just because the world has taken the meaning and changed it around doesn't mean we should accept it! Don't let the world steal your hope!
Just when we say I will pray for you or God Bless you we should say it with meaning the true meaning! So next time you have a "hope so attitude " try and make sure it is in the true meaning of hope! Don"t wishy wash it say it with the confidence that we have as children of God. hallelujah.
God bless!
