“Good and upright is the Lord;
Therefore He instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in justice,
And He teaches the humble His way.
All the paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and truth
To those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.” (Psalm 25:8-10 NASB1995)

The Way

What is “the way” in which God, the Lord, instructs sinners? Well, we read in the New Testament Scriptures that if anyone would come after Christ he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin) and follow (obey) the Lord. For if we hold on to our old lives of living in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if for the sake of Jesus we deny self, die to sin, and follow him in obedience, we have eternal life (see Luke 9:23-26).

And we learn the truth that is in Christ Jesus, “that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” (Ephesians 4:22-24).

For by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness in walks of obedience to God’s commands. We are no longer to permit sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 1:18-32; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 10:19-39; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]

The Humble

And who are the humble? They are the repentant, the submissive, those whose lives are surrendered to the Lord, to do his will. By faith in Jesus Christ, which is persuaded of God, they humbled themselves and became obedient to God in death to sin and in being raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him no longer to live as slaves to sin but now as servants of the Lord Jesus and of his righteousness. They are the teachable whose ears are attentive to listening to God and to obeying his commands.

And what is the way of the Lord being taught to the humble? We are taught to not rely on ourselves and our own way of thinking, but to put our dependency in the Lord for all things. We are taught that God’s grace is sufficient for us to meet us in every need so that we are not to fear whatever comes our way, but we are to trust in the Lord to carry us through every trial and every difficult circumstance, knowing that God is sovereign over all and that his plan will be accomplished for the glory of God.

[Jeremiah 1:4-19; Matthew 10:24-28; Luke 21:13; Acts 23:11; Romans 5:3-5; 2 Corinthians 1:3-11; 2 Corinthians 4:17; ; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10; Philippians 1:12-14; 2 Timothy 1:6-7; Hebrews 12:3-12; James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 1:6-7; 1 Peter 3:13-17; Revelation 2:9-10; Revelation 3:19]

Lovingkindness and Truth

And what is meant by, “All the paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies”? Well, in the New Testament we read that, by God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ, we must give up our former lives of living in sin to now follow our Lord in walks of surrender to God in obedience to his commands. And we also read that God allows us to suffer for the sake of righteousness, and even that suffering is God’s lovingkindness in making us and in molding us into his likeness.

So, if we are followers of Jesus Christ who have denied self, died with Christ to sin, and who are now walking in obedience to his commands, in holy living, in the power of God, we are promised not only salvation from sin and eternal life with God, but also that we will be called upon to suffer for the sake of the name of Jesus and for his righteousness. And even that is to be regarded as the lovingkindness of God, because through suffering he is training us and equipping us to be his faithful servants and messengers.

[Matthew 5:10-12; Matthew 10:16-25,34-39; Matthew 24:9-14; Luke 6:22-23; Luke 12:49-53; Luke 21:12-17; John 15:18-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Revelation 6:9-11; Revelation 7:9-17; Revelation 11:1-3; Revelation 12:17; Revelation 13:1-18; Revelation 14:1-13]

Wonderful Grace of Jesus

By Haldor Lillenas, 1918

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Greater than all my sin;
How shall my tongue describe it,
Where shall its praise begin?
Taking away my burden,
Setting my spirit free;
For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Reaching to all the lost,
By it I have been pardoned,
Saved to the uttermost;
Chains have been torn asunder,
Giving me liberty;
For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Reaching the most defiled,
By its transforming power,
Making him God’s dear child,
Purchasing peace and heaven
For all eternity—
And the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus,
Deeper than the mighty rolling sea;
Higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain,
All-sufficient grace for even me!
Broader than the scope of my transgressions,
Greater far than all my sin and shame;
Oh, magnify the precious Name of Jesus,
Praise His Name!
