The reward for their faith will be received at the resurrection. That is when all of us in Christ will be made perfect. Those whom the apostle was speaking lived by faith prior to Christ, and so they will recieve their reward when we do at the resurrection.

From verses 33-40, those heroes of faith were not mentioned by name; however, they were as important as those named in the previous verses. The information given about them showed that they are just as assured of a "good report" as those previously mentioned. They never knew that they would be listed in the heroes of faith. God provided a way "so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion, the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob."(Romans 11:26) The promise was for the Deliverer---the Deliverer was Christ. HE came to complete, finish,
and fulfill the promise. "And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:"(Colossians 2:10). Those without Christ will never be lead into perfection(maturity).

I love Matthew Henry's Classic Commentaries:
Verses 39-40 The world considers that the righteous are not worthy to live in the world, and God declares the world is not worthy of them. Though the righteous and the worldlings widely differ in their judgment, they agree in this, it is not fit that good men should have their rest in this world. Therefore God receives them out of it. The apostle tells the Hebrews, that God had provided some better things for them, therefore they might be sure that he expected as good things from them. As our advantages, with the better things God has provided for us, are so much beyond theirs, so should our obedience of faith, patience of hope, and labour of love, be greater. And unless we get true faith as these believers had, they will rise up to condemn us at the last day. Let us then pray continually for the increase of our faith, that we may follow these bright examples, and be, with them, at length made perfect in holiness and happiness, and shine like the sun in the kingdom of our Father for evermore

Hebrews 11:12-16, NKJ
12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude--innumerable as the sand which is by the searshore. 13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but haveing seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things delcare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But no they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

In the book of Hebrews Paul wrote about heirs of the promises (covenants). In chapter 11, verses 39 and 40, he compared the faith of the Old and New Testament saints.
HEBREWS 6:17-20, NKJ
17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath,
18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
19 This hope we have as an ancor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,
20 were the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
