saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done." Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 22:42-44 NKJV
As Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, He was in a sort of anguish we have no way to comprehend. He knew the pain and suffering He would endure in the coming hours, and His human side wondered if there was another way to rescue humankind from the consequences of sin. But Jesus was submitted to His Father’s will and plan.
“Not my will, but yours be done.” This was the perfect prayer for a perfect Savior who was fully committed to obeying His heavenly Father in every way, even when that obedience came at the coast of horrific suffering.
Jesus gave Himself up to die a horrible, ugly, humiliating death on a Roman cross because it was the Father’s will for Him to do so—and because He loved us so deeply. And He also set a perfect example of obedience to God’s will.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You set an amazing example of submission to God the Father when You prayed this anguished prayer: “Not my will, but yours be done.” Help me to follow Your example of love, obedience, and submission, especially when my heart and soul are hurting.
