Dear TJers

Am thinking of holding a bible trivia quiz nite, any tips?
I have a book of questions, theres two books, one challenge from the old and one from the New testament what is the best way to organise one? I haven't organised one before. It will be across different churches, is it best to have a team from each church, or just two teams..starting small?

What would be a good prize? And most importantly what will we have for supper?

Hi @Lanolin

You could perhaps do a test run with members of your own church first splitting them into two teams?

Things to consider

Men versus women?

What ages will be involved?

Having a " first team who knows the answer" presses the buzzer type quiz can be fun.....but the teams would need to be carefully chosen. (I attended a quiz once where a bunch of hyper scholastic elders formed one of the teams, the type that could quote Ezekiel word for word....no-one else stood a chance)

Supper

You could do the usual churchy ' bring your own plate to share'

Or order a yummy pizza or fish and chips.

I don't have any buzzers....
We could do pen and paper but it does take longer - I don't like quizzes that drag on for ages.

I am trying to organise a mix team and I think all ages will be welcome. I will need to place the bible nerds evenly amongst the teams lol OR the teams will need to sort themselves out and swot up beforehand!

Hot food is always good and nibbles while answering questions. I don't think I like BYO potluck because that's just another thing to remember!

They can be great.

Make sure that it is set up so that everybody gets a chance to talk to people they wouldn't normally spend time with, and that everybody gets to contribute.

If it's a straight quiz there's a danger that one or two people will know everything and everyone else feels like passengers.

Add in plain fun elements - teams recreate the tower of babel using only spaghetti and marshmallows, dress a volunteer queen Esther with newspaper sheets and sellotape, an observation round from a Bible film clip...

It'll give children and those who don't have great bible knowledge a chance to shine.

I like the fun challenges.

Can do build a paper cup challenge..and maybe beat the clock challenge for the fun elements.
I need some ideas for bonus rounds so you can get a whole lot of points. Maybe memory verses that you cut up the words and shuffle the first team to put them in right order wins?

Cardboard cut out Goliath target and nerf guns?

Do you have alphabetti spaghetti in NZ? Perfect for spelling out a short Bible verse

An easy creative round. How about a collage of the tree with leaves for the healing of the nations (Revelation)

Have an idea..a bible race relay, each person has to do a lap of the room balancing a bible on their head.

Nice! But be a little cautious about using Bible. People are likely to get upset if they see the word of God being used as a plaything. Especially if there's a chance that the bibles get damaged.

Oh, good point. There are other books in the church library I suppose, but the point is you have to walk very carefully you can't run. If it drops off you have to catch it.

Nothings happening so far but I do have a maybe host venue and two squeaky hamburgers for buzzers.

Went into an op shop the other day and guess what I found?

Bible 'trivia' game!!! Its got all the questions on cards, for adults and children..2-12 players plus its KJV!! What more could you ask for! And It was only $2!

Ask and you shall receive!
How wonderful is our God!
You'll have to let us know how it goes! Alleluia!

I tested it out with a friend. Pretty good! You have three rounds of seven questions from different categories and at the end of each round if you complete them you are crowned, you need three crowns to win.

There were children's questions but we found them too easy so did the adults ones.
My friend won! I think I have to brush up on history (some of it is not actually in scripture) but I did finish the game.

We can have teams. I'm sure could do a quick fire round and play it different ways.

Update we did have another game with four sisters and we enjoyed it. We also had dinner too,
I might bring the game on retreat.
