'Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, the wickedness of the kings of Judah, the wickedness of their wives, your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? The people of Judah were in denial about the scale of their sins, which extended back for generations and continued right into the present moment. The pride and resistance to God that characterized their ancestors remained unbroken as they ignored God’s teachings, believing they were above accountability for their actions.
Restoring your relationship with God may call for you to look back at your past, even the patterns and practices of generations past. Are you willing to humble your heart before God and to admit the ways you and those before you have failed? Resisting God doesn’t have to be your inheritance, but you won’t be able to chart a new course until you come clean with both your own sins and the sins of generations past that have influenced where you stand today. God longs to bring you mercy and healing, but the truth of your history needs to come out first.
Prayer: Lord, help me to humbly acknowledge both the influence of those who came before me and the ways I have continued in their ways.
