We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. Romans 5:3 NLT
Even though the promise of the gospel is familiar, it’s still underrated. Jesus freely gives us peace with God so that we can enjoy the peace of God. It’s so beautifully simple—maybe that’s why we complicate it with worry and doubt. Sure, both those responses to the world are normal, but we can’t afford to let them bleed into the wonder of the freedom Christ purchased for us.
The path Jesus laid out for us starts with salvation, but it continues through the world’s thorny, uphill road, a journey that challenges us again and again to trust God with all we are, think, and do. We don’t thank God for the hardship but for His faithfulness while it lasts. He is doing something through each ordeal that He can’t do any other way.
We need endurance to thrive in this life, and the gospel promises that—a progression that uses perseverance to develop character and character to grow hope. And hope fuels us to walk steadily with God. As Psalm 119:1 says, “Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD.”
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me stay the course with You. Be my strength to face trials with courage, trusting that You’re shaping me more into Your image all the time.
