Hovercraft - July 20, 2006
"Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good." Genesis 1:2-4
Hovercraft; kind of a funny word. Many years ago we had an opportunity to take a ride on a hovercraft. I thought we were getting onto a ferry to cross a body of water. We drove our cars onto it, as if driving onto a large ferry boat.
Once underway, the vessel sort of inflated under us, and we went roaring off across the sea. I learned that, in principle, it's a craft that skims over the water (or land) on a cushion of air created by jet engines. It was quite an experience.
Not long ago I was studying the first chapter, in the first book, of the Bible, Genesis. "In the beginning God." In Genesis 1 it says the Spirit of God hovered over the waters; then God spoke, and something happened. A creative miracle; something GOOD.
Luke 1:35, says, "The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; Therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God." (The Message)
I believe the Holy Spirit hovers today, before something happens (something good). A good prayer might be, "Hover over us, Holy Spirit. We can then look with expectation to whatever good thing You are going to do. In Jesus' mighty name Amen."
