Romans 15:4 And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope.
Acts 20:32 "And now I entrust you to God and his care and to his wonderful words that are able to build your faith and give you all the inheritance of those who are set apart for himself.
Joshua 1:8 Don't stop reading this book of the Law, but day and night think of what it says, so you can be careful to do everything written in it; then you will prosper and succeed.

Prayerfully reading the Scriptures yourself is the only real defense against being misled.

Try to read it every day, but there are days where I have a struggle to get up in the morning...

Need new option: hodge podge

Sometimes I'll have ages where I read every day, then I'll have ages when I don't read at all.

I had to say daily, not to boast in such a fact!! But because I need his Word everyday!! It has been many years now,and God's Word is such a part of my life,it would like be going outside without my wallet! How could I function without what I need to sustain me??

Prayer the same way!! A good brother said well mark I do not pray everyday!! I mean really!! I said well that is ok brother,I have to pray daily myself! He asked why is that??I said because I believe it is a sin not to pray!( 1 sam 12:23) then quoted this to him. Perhaps i will consider this he said. I sure know I do brother!!

I made this poll out of the fact that I realized I
wasn't reading the Bible as much as I used to.
When I have sinned, I feel I have angered God
or disappointed Him, so I don't read the Bible or
talk to Him, not out of rebellion, but out of shame
and guilt. I was in chat the other night when
our brothers and sisters told me about grace and
faith, and how much forgiveness God really holds
for me. I felt the distance in my relationship with
God being shortened, and was so joyful to hear this.

I read on a daily basis, but I cannot say that it is without fail. In a conversation, the one with the most to say is the one who is most educated on the subject. Since prayer is talking to God and reading the bible is listening to him, I don't want to be the one doing all the talking as I understand very little about the subject as compared to him.

:)

I said everyday. these days it seems that there is always something I need in the word to encourage me and God speaks to me through His very word, so I do try daily to read His word.

God's Truth is always revealed...part of following the Holy Spirit is to read the word. The word of God is food to the spirit and feeds our spirit as regular food feeds the body. In the beginning there was the Word and the Word was with God... This is speaking of the living word Jesus Christ and He Himself read the scriptures and taught from them. So shouldn't follow this example...yep we sure should.

Praise God for loving us so much!

Daily reading from the gospels using a study Bible to get background information could be an antedote to depression AND you can read it lying down.

Not often enough. :embarasse

I hear ya there. I have recently decided to
begin at the beginning, but this time,
instead of doing it just to finish it, I want
to go slower, really search deep for the more subtle
things I didn't see before. I usually blew past the creation
story, but I know now since reading it that it is way more
important than I used to think it is. I want God to show
me His wisdom.

I try to read a few verses every morning/evening, but I know that I need to improve my understanding of these verses so that i'm not just reading but genuinely taking in His word.

The thing to consider is that milk and meat may be for the body but the word of God feeds the soul. Are you sure you want to be on a diet that might cause you to perish?

I have wondered, maybe I should read more and go on TJ less. :embarasse

The parable of the sower.

He tries to steal the word first

He tries to kill the plant

He tries to suffocate the plant with business

He fails, the plant produces fruit.

I think to often our Bible reading becomes ritualistic and there for becomes law in our lives that makes us feel guilty if we skip a day and some how feel like Gods favor is not with us and He's mad at us now.

We must be careful of this.

Many dangerous cults started out from reading the bible.

What about following HolySpirit?

I assume her reference to studying "prayerfully" points to the Holy Spirit guiding one's study. And I agree with her advice. The scriptures explain the scriptures, and the more you read it the more the LORD will be able to crystalize His truth in your heart and mind. Trust me, if you get in this word enough and get alone with Jesus enough, you won't need a degree in theology. The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth. Then the Word stands on its own, and the Holy Spirit will guide you in how to apply it.

I would also spend time with a decent translation that's more exact and less dynamic. The English Standard Version is a good one. Some dynamic translations misinterpret what God's original meaning is.

I'm not saying a theology degree is worthless, I'm saying trusting a Bible college, or any man, is more dangerous than simply, and prayerfully studying God's word with your whole heart, mind, and strength. The LORD is a rewarder of those who dilligently seek Him.

I sadly don't read it very often but when I do read it, I tend to just open the Bible to a random chapter because it doesn't matter if you know what came before the chapter you're reading, you will still gain some knowledge from reading what you're about to read.

Ben this is very dangerous to do. Context is important. If I were to open the book of Romans to chapter 8 and begin reading in verse 28 without having any understanding of the foundation set by chapters 1-7 and the first 27 verses of chapter 8, then the enemy, the Devil, can move in and begin to deceive me.

How it works:

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Rom 8:28).

The spiritual conversation unseen:

Satan: God loves you, you see?
Child: Yes, it says everything works toward my good if I love him.
Satan: And you know what love is, it is the warm feeling you have for others when they love you.
Child: But what about the bad things that are happening in my life? My parents fight all the time.
Satan: God is working this out for your good because you love him as I say.
Child: But I haven't been very good lately. I have done bad things and some of those are what my parents are arguing about.
Satan: Don't worry, remember God loves you just as you are.
Child: And all of this is working toward my good?
Satan: Yes, my son, they are. You can't help but sin. Your a sinner. God loves you anyway. Do you love God?
Child: Yes.
Satan: Say no more, only believe.
Child: OK
Satan: Now go and try to be better, you will never be good. Just try to be better.
Child: OK

It is very tragic but we loose more Christians this way.

Please work to understand the complete context of every statement that God has made in his Word without allowing Satan to turn every verse that appeals to the flesh into a universal untruth.

God loves you, not with the mushy affectionate love of the world but with a pure love that seeks your best interest even if he is chastening you with the rod of his mouth.

Love In Christ,

Gary
