Acts 19:23 About that time there occurred no small disturbance concerning the Way.
Acts 19:24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen;
Acts 19:25 these he gathered together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, "Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.
Acts 19:26 "You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all.
Acts 19:27 "Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence."
Acts 19:28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
Acts 19:29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia.

There are about a dozen verses in the Bible that mention idols made with human hands. Sometimes when we think of idols we view a little statue.
Perhaps a statue of Mary or a crucifix with Jesus on the cross. But all idols are not made of wood and metal.
Sometimes famous actors and musicians are called idols. There was even a television show called "American Idol". It seems we want to transform
some people into idols. As Demetrius pointed out in the passage above. There can be a lot of money involved in making idols.

Where would radio, television and the cinema be without idols? Why are people like Taylor Swift making hundreds of millions of dollars?
Some sports personalities could be called idols. The Bible says where a man's treasure is, that's where his heart is.

Who is your heart following today? How much money have you spent on secular music? Mp3 downloads and video of concerts?
How much money have you spent on Lebron James jerseys and Scarlet Johannson posters? How many church services, Bible studies, and prayer
sessions have you missed because you were watching a concert, or movie, or football game? How much money have you spent on these things over
what you have given to the church?

All of these things aren't necessarily evil in themselves, but when they start taking importance and priority over God, then it's a problem.
Now you have an idol whether you know it or not.

Exod 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exod 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Exod 20:5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,

We can blame the media, and shows like "The Voice" and people like Demetrius above for making idols.
But at the end of the day, it's really us who make the idols. As Demetrius said, there is money in making idols.
What if everyone quit giving money to these things? Then where would the idol business be?
Why do we feel the need to worship something or someone? If you're going to worship someone, why not worship God?

I know people who can quote every line of a Harry Potter movie, or a Star Wars movie, but they can't quote a single
Bible scripture. Who is your God? Who is your priority?

I know people who will travel 300 miles and spend hundreds of dollars to see a Rock band, but they won't travel five
miles to go to church. Who is your idol?

People still buy cars and worship them; people buy motorcycles and worship them. People buy baseball cards and put them on the wall like an alter of worship. I've been to people's estates sales, and they worshipped Barbie dolls. This list goes on and on. Idol worship is still going on. I have to shake my head what things put their life worth into, instead of Jesus Christ who gives them eternal life.

they worshipped Barbie dolls

This post makes me wonder how much we encourage our children to worship idols?
We buy them phones, video games, send them to soccer practice, buy them sports tickets,
take them to Disney movies, ... and then when they get a little older, into their teenage years,
we wonder why God isn't that important to them.

Children see toys as fun. Girls like dolls to play house. boys tend like sports for the fun and competitiveness of. As they grow older, that's when the idol worship start. first its stars or actors. musicians and such that make idols of themselves. People follow them. Then big boy toys. a boat can be seen as a status symbol and an Idol. like I said cars, people that collects cars are the same as barbie collectors, they worship their collections. If at least brought up in the church, its taught as idol worship. Christians see it a stubble and hay. Cars rust out, barbies get thrown away. Cars to me is transportation.
