The man measured the gateway entrance, which was 17 1/2 feet wide at the opening and 22 3/4 feet wide in the gateway passage. Ezekiel 40:11 NLT

If you’re an architect (or always wanted to be), you’ll love Ezekiel 40. If not, this detailed verbal blueprint of the future temple may be daunting.

God gave Ezekiel a vision of the gateways, outer and inner courtyards, and rooms both for priests and the preparing of sacrifices. There are plenty of measurements and explanations: window placement, numbers of steps, even decorations (carved palm trees appear throughout). The level of detail is reminiscent of the plans for the ark of the covenant that God had given Moses (Exodus 25).

So what does it all mean to us?

One takeaway is simply the immense knowledge of God. The One who flung the farthest stars into the universe has also planned three-inch hooks for the temple’s foyer walls (Ezekiel 40:43), a level of detail squaring perfectly with Jesus’ teaching: “What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered” (Luke 12:6-7 NLT). And God’s not just showing off. Jesus went on to say, “So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable than a whole flock of sparrows.”

With a God like this, human worry is utterly unnecessary.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for overseeing all the details. Help me to trust You completely.
