By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy does not shout in triumph over me. Psalm 41:11 CSB
It’s easy to lose heart when you feel like you’re being bullied. You flop inside like those tall inflatable tube men you see waving their arms outside car dealerships. There isn’t much holding you up, and whatever help you find in personal effort can leave you more quickly than it arrived.
Psalm 41 shows that David was in this kind of place. He was angry over the success of those who had bullied him. He recognized that what was going on wasn’t fair. Revenge would have been David’s preference, but he also knew that no one had the ability to triumph over him without God’s permission.
So the king was all in, committed, and encouraged to trust—completely, persistently, and with ongoing determination. David knew that God was with him and that with God he was in the majority. Any minority opinion didn’t matter in view of eternity. It was simply a short-lived season of trouble dismissed by God’s helping hand.
There’s a lesson here for you. There’s hope in this instruction. There’s joy in holding on.
Prayer: There’s just one You, Lord. You know more, do more, and teach more than I will. Help me learn what You teach, watch what You do, and understand more about You and Your ways.
