I thought you were a man of reason!
Only when it is sarcasm...by the way which emoji is the sarcastic one? What am I to make of the lack of a sarcasm emoji? Was it sarcasm? Wasn't it? (Who's your hairdresser.)
No hairdresser or barber for that matter.
You mean they signed it out at Alexandria and had to return it by a certain day, so others on the waiting list could then sign it out? What a waiting list that must have been!!! (Sarcasm)
I know, but sometimes it comes to me to add a little example of how the simple folks see everyday life that academia forgets about. Just like the simple folks do not comprehend the bubble that academia lives in a real sense of reality. Think of it as being like the different tribes in the OT and depending on the land/expertise of each tribe, understanding of each other wasn't always a guarantee. (Levites to the other tribes especially.) Maybe I should use milking a cow as an example. Read all you want about how to, but until you actually do it, it's only conjecture/supposition on the part of the reader, and dare I say it won't guarantee success or milk for that matter if put to the test. Or the time it takes to research and learn information on another culture/language that has no real foundation in the everyday life of the person seeking to gain that knowledge and doing so by pouring through such documents of antiquity. Can be hardly understood by another but hopefully appreciated as a worthy endeavor.Ahh... there it is. (The sarcasm... It does not become you.)
Amazing that we know anything about them, isn't it.Well, Nick, it wasn't called the Library of Alexandria for nothing. And YES, the policy was exactly like those for reference books in your own libraries of today. One couldn't take them out of the library because they just cost too damn much. Consider the cost of a complete set of scrolls. Only the very rich could own a personal copy. Do you own a Bugatti? Neither would you have owned a Septuagint - but you could go read it at the Library. Extant copies were rather few in number, and when dealing with a handful of manuscripts, it's easy to spend the time to ensure an unparalleled accuracy. The larger quantity of Hebrew Manuscripts as needed for each synagogue would make accuracy more difficult, but it didn't seem like the average Jew cared about that, especially those to whom Judaism meant participating in the Temple rituals, sacrifices, and feasts.
No Bugatti here, but according to my sisters research we do have a member of the family who was a Prime Minister to a King.
Still, I'm sure even the smaller community of Jews who were able to afford a Synagogue would have had some type of scroll of an OT Book to read. Otherwise, I don't think they'd of built a synagogue and maybe they just went to the one in the next town over, to do so.
I believe where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, ....
What I was talking about was accessibility/availability to the common man in the synagogue they would attend. You discount it, because it appears to you that only Septuagint existed in the time of Jesus or was available to him. I say that even by your reckoning, it could have been another writing, that did not come from the Scrolls that were used in the creation of the Septuagint. The poorer the folks would have been more likely have in hand a poorer type of copy, but for the benefactor that wanted to look good by his generosity. Both Jew/Gentile of course. How can one even rationally compare the DSS and their origins with that of the LXX? The LXX was 570 miles away from the DSS and 300 years in the past.
The development of the Hebrew texts as testified by the DSS just doesn't apply to that of the LXX. It's like comparing figs and pommegranites.
Though in truth I do not believe the Son of God would have needed them. I think about him as a child talking with the religious teachers (Luke 2:41-52), and that it suggests that it was a few days of Him doing this. Maybe, some of this learning was also received from the mysterious time in Egypt.
Which evidenced that differing copies of the books did exist.
And if you wanted to argue myside of it, you'd have no problem doing so.Yes, the Hebrew texts. My article covered this extensively. But nothing was said about the LXX, so you're just assuming.
I'm backlogged enough books that I need to be reading.
Sometimes you do come off as an idiot brother, but I still love you even if you had this wrong. What was the book you were willing to buy for me? I believe it was something about "Misquoting Jesus..." (post#43)We were talking about an Interlinear New Testament. You have books to read that are more important than the New Testament? Wow.
Then again maybe you confused me with Brother DaveM who you also mentioned the Interlinear NT to. For I do own an Interlinear Greek-English NT and would have said so if that was what you were offering to purchase for me and just as appreciative if not more so for your thoughtful consideration if it had been.
Sometimes, I think you just do this on purpose, so we can continue to have this little back and forth.![]()
I think I'm going to have to help you with the jargon of us common folks.Sometimes I think you make mistakes on purpose just to kick the dogs.
By the way I only kicked one dog, who was loose and went after my little precious one (15 lbs.) who was on a chain trying to take care of business. Out weighted my dog by over 100lbs at least (125lbs)! No damage to the dog since I just wanted to send it tumbling away from my critter, and not to actually hurt it. I do believe my tongue lashing to the neighbors to keep their dog on a chain/rope, was more hurtful in the long run.
remember, you're the scholar, and I'm just a simple man.
No insult, just fact...at least according to your own words and mine. Now maybe if you had kept the context with what you quoted of me saying, it might make more sense to you.And you rail that my insults are too subtle.
However, if you decide to contact him, I would be interested in how your exchange goes.
Which really does not speak well of you brother if you were to think about it.For what reason? I see no reason to contact any individual who cannot take the time to ensure that his mistakes were expunged.
I am sure many will gain insight to what you provided here.
Isn't that what it's really about the hope that whatever we do will somehow, someway, help others to grow closer, and more knowledgeable in His Word and then be open to being drawn to the only one by which one can be saved, my Jesus. \o/One would hope. But I strongly doubt that anyone read the article.
With the Love of Christ Jesus.
