"Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth, and no one will even think about the old ones anymore. Isaiah 65:17 NLT
What are your fondest memories? Of leading (or simply cheering) your team to a championship? Of a certain vacation, a business achievement, the acquisition of some long-desired object? Of meeting your girl, getting married, having kids?
How about your worst memories? A bad diagnosis, an accident, a house fire? A breakup, betrayal, or bankruptcy?
Life is an ongoing roller-coaster ride. We exult in the peaks and hold on for dear life as we careen into the valleys. But no matter how exciting or depressing our experiences on this earth, a day is coming when none of it will matter.
God’s promise through Isaiah indicates that our worst experiences will one day be completely erased from our minds. The Christians’ eternity with God will be so good that “no one will even think about” what went before.
On the other hand, even our best experiences will pale in comparison. As the apostle Paul wrote, referring to another passage from Isaiah, “That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him’” (1 Corinthians 2:9) see also Isaiah 64:4).
Eternity is coming. And it’s all good.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the promise of perfect peace and rest. I need it!
