It Should Have Been Me

It should have been me getting betrayed.
It should have been me getting spit on.
It should have been me getting arrested.
It should have been me getting whipped.
It should have been me getting flogged.
It should have been me getting yelled at.
It should have been me getting a crown of thorns jammed on my head.
It should have been me getting mocked.
It should have been me having to carry my cross.
It should have been me getting nailed to that cross.
It should have been me crying out in pain.
It should have been me getting my side pierced with a sword.
It should have been me dying that day.

But it was You.
It was the Son of God.
It was the Lamb of God.
It was the Prince of Peace.
It was the Great Counselor.
It was the Messiah.
It was the Savior of the world.
It was the Pure Lamb.
It was the one called Jesus.
It was the baby boy born of a virgin.
It was the Mighty God.
It was the Everlasting Father.
It was the King of kings.

It should have been me, but it was You!
The one that did nothing wrong.
The one that paid for all.
The one that I am indebted to.
The one that I can never repay.
The one I will live for.
The one that I can always come to.
And for all that You have done,
Here I am! Send me, too!

For it should have been me up on that cross and not You!
But You paid a price You did not owe.
For that I (and we all should be) VERY grateful!
