I've tried to believe in Christianity but I can't...

For about two years now I've been flirting with the idea of becoming a Christian. I don't mean actual flirting, it's a figure of speech. I've tried so hard to believe, but I just can't. I can't force myself to believe, no matter how hard I try.

Ephesians 2:8-9: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of ourselves; it is the gift of God."
I can't produce my own faith, it must be given from God. And I have no faith.

I have always believed in God, but that is the extent of my faith. I believe there is a God. I've tried to believe in the other stuff, I've prayed to God asking him to open my heart and let him in, but it hasn't worked.

I can't believe the Bible is inerrant. I can't do it. There is no proof outside the Bible that the Bible is 100% truth.

I can't believe in the trinity. It makes no sense to me. People say, "Oh us humans just can't understand the concept" but I feel like that's an excuse when you can't think of a good reason for me to believe in it.

I can't believe Jesus is God. It kind of ties in with not believing in the trinity. Jesus can't be God's son and God at the same time...

I can't believe that Jesus would have had to die for our sins to save us from hell. God is in charge here, so why can't he just let us in to heaven? He's supposed to be loving and forgiving. I get punishing your kids, but hell is an eternal punishment, no father punishes his child for eternity. So why would God need Jesus to die for our sins to let us in to heaven? How come dying on the cross saved us anyhow?

I can't believe that non-believers go to hell. I refuse to believe that God would send good people to hell for not worshiping him. I would rather go to hell than worship a God like that. God loves all his children! You don't send someone you love to hell!

I just need someone to explain all this without using the Bible or prove that the Bible is 100% correct, which I doubt is possible. I really need help and guidance.

Hi @Leah Schultz

First, welcome to the forums. I'm glad you're here!

Let me respond to some of your comments so I can help you.

There is no proof outside the Bible that the Bible is 100% truth.

Actually, that's not true. There's lots of resources to support the bible (old and modern). But, even better? Believers. We're proof of God's goodness. We speak it, state His goodness and share our testimonies. We would not do so if what we felt were not true. Makes sense. I would not tell you how awesome God is if I wasn't actually feeling that way, or believing He is awesome.

So you don't think I'm being biased, here's some other sites you can check on resources for proof. Believe me, there's a ridiculous amount and I'd researched myself for the last 13 years. Take my word for it.

Do you understand why God created hell? Do you understand what it means that God is Holy? Do you understand that God doesn't "send people to hell", but instead sent Jesus on the Cross to pay for ALL sins of the entire world. What do we do to respond? Accept His free gift of Salvation, His grace and follow Him. There's zero excuse to reject a God of love, mercies, comfort, and so many other awesome things He is.

Now, if you're truly interested in knowing why hell exists, God's holiness, etc please read and see
I can't believe in a God who would send people to hell
Rejecting God Because of Hell Is Illogical
How is Hell a fair punishment for sin?

But, you need to first understand His personality, His characteristics. It's only fair and an honest approach before stating anything about Him (or anyone for that matter).

Why can't you believe in the Trinity? Then again, remember we are humans and we cannot compare to GOD on the same level. It's a fair truth.

Analogy: Humans are 3 parts too. Body, Soul, Spirit

Here's a good external read about man being 3 parts. Nothing complicated or "spiritual" nonsense. Just truth.

Nonbelievers' Biggest Misconception About Jesus
If God is all powerful and loving, why is there suffering in the world?

Hi Leah,

If you do not/cannot believe these things, then why are you wrestling with this subject? Why are you thinking about these things at all?

16 So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. - John 7

God is more than able to reveal himself to you. He has no obligation to do so when we put him to the test, but he is not a monster, and doesn't neglect those who earnestly seek him. If it's your will to know God's will, he will make it known to you. It's really that simple.

If you seek God with all your heart, you will find Him. He is not far from us, he is very near. If you truly desire Him, he will reveal himself to you. You don't need human beings to explain this stuff to you, you need the God of the Universe to move in your life. That's what you should be seeking, I think anyway :)

Have you heard the gospel being preached?

Blessings,

Travis

Good question, I forgot to mention the answer to this in my original post. I feel drawn in, like I'm being called. But I'm struggling. I pray and ask for guidance but all I get is more doubts. :(

You have plenty of faith. Faith in science. You believe what they tell you and never assume they might be wrong. They wont tell you that many of their assumptions are only that, assumptions of how it might have been done "if" there wasnt a God. Faith in God and that Jesus is His son is just that, Faith. If you want God to prove that Jesus is real, you better ask Him. He does listen to those who make requests, but understand this, if you are arrogant in your demand for greater and greater proofs, He may decide you wont listen no matter what He does. The Spirit of God is alive and real, not an intellectual idea.

Thank you so much for all the info! It really helped a lot. I just have one question, regarding God and hell. It's not that if God sends people to hell I don't believe in God, I see how that is illogical. I will believe in God no matter what. My problem is that if God sends good people to hell, I don't know if I want to WORSHIP him, if that makes sense. Like, the government is in control of the country, but it does bad things, so I don't like it. I know it's different, so it's hard to make an analogy for that. Any advice?

I have asked him. I try to be respectful when talking to God. If God sends me just one little ounce of proof, I'll take it.

Also, I try to remain suspicious of scientific theories, I like to think them through and look at evidence before agreeing they are true.

Dearest Leah
Jesus saw the fall (sin) of all mankind and He chose to die for us; God didn't make Him; He did it willing. He loved us more than His own life and He put us first. Is that not enough to honor Him and worship Him and give Him praise and glory? People will tell you one thing and do the right opposite. We deal with this everyday; would they die for you? I love my son so much, I would give my life and die that he would live. I love my mother, I would give my life that she would live. God asks us to love our neighbor as ourselves; put others first, just as Jesus put us first and to no thought of Himself, only that it made Father God happy.
You are young and maybe don't understand these things now, but God will reveal to you all things if you will seek Him with your heart.

For about two years now I've been flirting with the idea of becoming a Christian. I don't mean actual flirting, it's a figure of speech. I've tried so hard to believe, but I just can't. I can't force myself to believe, no matter how hard I try.

So then don't force yourself to believe. As you have said it cannot be done and scripture does support that.

Ephesians 2:8-9: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of ourselves; it is the gift of God."
I can't produce my own faith, it must be given from God. And I have no faith.

As someone has already said, here, 'You do have faith'. Everyone does, even those who shout loudly that they do not. Faith toward God is, however, another thing, isn't it?

I have always believed in God, but that is the extent of my faith. I believe there is a God. I've tried to believe in the other stuff, I've prayed to God asking him to open my heart and let him in, but it hasn't worked.

Don't start with something so difficult for yourself and for so many others. I have been a believer for many years and a Bible student, but some things in scripture I have had to put on the shelf because I could not see where they fit. Some of those are still on the shelf waiting for clarification. We do not have to be rocket scientists to serve God. We do not have to have the brain capacity and ability of Einstein to serve God and please Him. If that were so then wouldn't the best followers of Christ be the smartest and best educated?

The secret is faith and I won't use a direct scriptural quotation scripture to explain what faith is... as God sees it. But, faith means believing something that cannot be verified as men are supposed to verify things in science. You already believe in God, don't add to that on your own. Reach out to Him quietly without anything else and ask for His help. Don't ask for specifics as it is unlikely you know what it is that you need. God knows. Don't ask only once. Ask everyday several times a day.

I can't believe the Bible is inerrant. I can't do it. There is no proof outside the Bible that the Bible is 100% truth.

No matter what anyone says, the only absolute proof available is in God Himself and in the hearts of people to whom He has given the proof. This can be shared with others, but others will not necessarily receive it. The verse you quote above touches on this, but there other scriptures which also explain, but people cannot on their own move toward God. It is impossible. They can choose to yield to Him and to ask for His help.

I can't believe in the trinity. It makes no sense to me. People say, "Oh us humans just can't understand the concept" but I feel like that's an excuse when you can't think of a good reason for me to believe in it.
You are not alone in having such doubts. To doubt is not in itself always an evil thing, but confess something as being the truth just because some man and men told you it was is perhaps an evil thing. Consider here this one verse of scripture from the Old Testament:

"O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." Jerem 10:23
Consider that verse and when and if you are able to accept the truth of it, you will probably be ready to move toward God

I can't believe Jesus is God. It kind of ties in with not believing in the trinity. Jesus can't be God's son and God at the same time...

You will read here on this forum and elsewhere many explanations of this question. Some may be helpful and some may be confusing and seemingly unbelievable. Leave them alone stand alone with the God you already believe and simply ask Him for help. Again don't ask too many specific questions for without God's help even the questions may make no sense.

I just need someone to explain all this without using the Bible or prove that the Bible is 100% correct, which I doubt is possible. I really need help and guidance.

The answer is not so simple that is can be found by immersing yourself in the Bible or avoiding it completely. I have found answers in scripture, but God is not confined to written scripture. I am praying for you and your situation,

So then don't force yourself to believe. As you have said it cannot be done and scripture does support that.

Hey Leah. Nice to see you here on TalkJesus. My experience before becoming a Christian was similar to yours. I believed in God, but even though I liked the idea of Jesus, I just couldn't believe. But about 18 months ago, after searching for truth in a passionate, obsessive manner for several years, The Lord finally gave me mercy and revealed Himself to me. So I will try to answer some of your questions. Hopefully I can help.

For about two years now I've been flirting with the idea of becoming a Christian. I don't mean actual flirting, it's a figure of speech. I've tried so hard to believe, but I just can't. I can't force myself to believe, no matter how hard I try.
The Bible says that if you seek, you will find. However, if you look at the greek in the original text, what it really means is that if you become completely obsessed with finding God, and absolutely passionate about searching for HIm, that EVENTUALLY He will reveal Himself to you. Remember, God is not your servant, you have sinned against Him and you do not deserve anything from Him.

The Bible is pretty good proof! :) If you would like a scientific defense of the bible, go to www Creation dot com.

I can't believe in the trinity. It makes no sense to me. People say, "Oh us humans just can't understand the concept" but I feel like that's an excuse when you can't think of a good reason for me to believe in it.
Think about this = there is one existence, one universe, one reality .. yet it is made up of three elements: time, space, and matter.

I can't believe Jesus is God. It kind of ties in with not believing in the trinity. Jesus can't be God's son and God at the same time...
The son of a human is a human, the son of a duck is a duck... the son of God is ..? think about it.

If you are guilty, and you are in court, a judge has to convict you. there is no way around it. you are guilty. but, if someone else pays your fine.. then you are free to go.

I can't believe that non-believers go to hell. I refuse to believe that God would send good people to hell for not worshiping him. I would rather go to hell than worship a God like that. God loves all his children! You don't send someone you love to hell!
This is a long discussion, but the most ancient forms of Christianity do no believe that "everyone" who does not believe goes to Hell...
I just need someone to explain all this without using the Bible or prove that the Bible is 100% correct, which I doubt is possible. I really need help and guidance.

I am late for church at the moment...
hope to talk later
bye

Ephesians 2:8-9: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of ourselves; it is the gift of God."
I can't produce my own faith, it must be given from God. And I have no faith.
It is given by God! You quoted as such in Ephesians 2:8-9....it is a gift from him and if it is a gift , it is free!
If you have no faith, like this, it means you have not been saved yet.
Look like it is time!

If God sends me just one little ounce of proof, I'll take it.

Ok, hear me loud and clear because this is the truth. God does care. You're on this site not by coincidence. You're also asking about GOD, Jesus and everything related because He is the one stirring your heart up. Out of His love and care for you. He's patient, willing to answer you and reveal Himself to you. He's gentle and faithful to do so. Your heartbeat, it's not of your own. It's His life giving breath.

Like, the government is in control of the country, but it does bad things, so I don't like it.

I understand your point, but entirely two different things. Governments are run by humans, all sinners, all flawed and mostly try their best but ample crooked politicians and such. But, GOD is infinite in wisdom, power. He's outside space, time and He is all knowing about everything. You have to look at Him from the right perspective, otherwise you'll never really understand that His ways are higher than ours. In other words, His ways, methods are infinitely wiser than ours. That's an awesome thing to understand and ultimately comforting.

Thank you so much for all the info! It really helped a lot. I just have one question, regarding God and hell. It's not that if God sends people to hell I don't believe in God, I see how that is illogical. I will believe in God no matter what. God will not send good people to Hell.

God loves people, even evil people, so much that He came down from Heaven and suffered for them.

God will not send anyone to Hell unless He has a very good reason for doing so.

However, I think in your human understanding, you probably think that people are better than they really are.

The Bible tells us that no one is good. Not a single person is good.

God also tells us that if we hate a person in our heart, we have committed murder.

So, think about this, in God's eyes hatred is as sinful as murder. Is there a single human being who has never hated someone, even a little bit? Well, then, we are all murderers.

So, trust in God that He is loving and merciful and will not send anyone to Hell without a very good reason. But know that there are no good people and no one deserves anything good from God.

I hope this helps.

I am praying for you.

First things first! I want to welcome you to TJ Leah Schultz
It's awesome that you have found this Christian Community!

You used "I can't" how many times in your initial post? (Nope I didn't count them either ;))

Instead of looking at the reasons why "I can't" start looking at the reasons why "I can".

That you used Ephesians 2:8-9 correctly means that you are not totally unfamiliar with some of the concepts proposed by the Bible. I do think that you can believe, but have a hard time accepting certain things that either others or the Bible have said are true. Seeking to understand what the Bible says and the reasons for them can be a life time project. These are the type of things that those here at TJ can help you with and believe it or not, really do want to help you with. Evidence by the responses you've received so far.

I won't go over the same things that others here have covered. Hopefully, they have given you much to think on for now. The one thing I will add, is that you remember that the way you, I or people in general may look at things. Is not the way God does.

Once again be welcome to Talk Jesus and know that I and others are praying for you.

I forgot, there is another good evidence for the trinity from creation.

First, we see: time, space, and matter.

Second, we see: 3 dimensions of space (up and down, side to side, front to back)

Hello Leah Schultz.

When reading the Bible, it is good to ask questions, it is even better to have a good think
about what the Bible states. Reading and understanding these ancient letters takes some
considerable time.

One of the statements you made in your post, was this statement of your's below.

I can't believe Jesus is God. It kind of ties in with not believing in the trinity. Jesus
can't be God's son and God at the same time...

The true identity of the Christ is a very deep revelation for anyone to receive. Not many Christians would
be able to correctly identify the Christ, by using the scripture. Even the apostles themselves, struggled with
Christ's true identity for years.

Here is a verse that you may find interesting.

John 5:39
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me (Jesus Christ)

The entire Bible is all about Jesus Christ. The Bible does not contain any real information about the Father at all.
The reason for this is simply, the heavens and the earth were created for Jesus Christ. All things exist, through
and for Jesus Christ, and that includes you and I, of course.

Colossians 1:16
For by Him (Jesus) all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through
Him (Jesus) and for Him (Jesus).

So whether you know anything about the Father is really of a secondary importance.

Whether you believe in a trinity or not, is likewise, not ultimately the real issue.

Whether Jesus is the Father's Son in a literal sense, is also not an important point.

What the scripture is really all about, is Jesus Christ, and the following very important message.

You must according to the scripture, believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This piece of information is called the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Here is this same Gospel message that
the apostle Paul preached.

1 Corinthians 15
15 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,
2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

This Gospel (the good news) is what must be believed, and it is the only way to be saved, there is no other way.

The definition of a Christian by the way Leah, is a person who believes in Jesus Christ.

The scripture has always been all about Jesus and was never about the Father.

Incidently Leah, should you not arrive at the belief in Jesus Christ at some future time.

You will be made to submit to Jesus Christ anyway, you cannot avoid the Christ.

Romans 14:11
For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall give praise to God.”

There is nowhere else to go in God's universe, but to the feet of the one who has authority over the heavens and the earth.
Sorry for being so very firm Leah, but you need to know where you stand in the scheme of things.

Now you know the Gospel and how you are saved Leah.

Never Leah, will you be able to say that you never heard the Gospel message.

Thank you for all the information, I appreciate it.
