"For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. John 6:38 NKJV
Jesus’ three-year earthly ministry was coming to an end. In everything He said and everything He had done, down to the last detail, He had set the perfect example of complete submission and obedience to the will of His Father in heaven. In doing that, He made Himself the perfect servant, the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men.
At the moment of truth, as His human side longed for a way to avoid the horrible suffering He knew was ahead, Jesus showed His commitment to the Father’s will when He prayed from His heart, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
The apostle Paul wrote of Jesus’ life—and death—here on earth: “He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human like likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:7-8). When Jesus prayed His prayer of complete submission to His Father’s will, He set the perfect example of obedience—and He also showed us what He was willing to suffer on our behalf.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being so committed to Your heavenly Father’s will by dying in my place so that I could have an eternal home in heaven with You.
