Speak up for those who have no voice, for the justice of all who are dispossessed. Proverbs 31:8 CSB

The power of the Roman Empire was still growing when Jesus began His earthly ministry. As a poor Jew living in a Roman-controlled Israel, Jesus was a member of the subjugated class. He came in humility and rejected the hopes of His fellow Jews to overthrown the Romans and rule in their place. When Jesus died on a Roman cross, the hopes of thee Jews, the poor, and the dispossessed died with Him.

But that wasn’t the end of the story.

Jesus rose from the grave, conquering sin and death. The Holy Spirit came in power to live inside His people. The church was established, and a safe haven was created for the poor and defenseless whom Jesus primarily ministered to.

Unfortunately, the church sometimes lost its way. Howard Thurman, civil rights forefather and author of Jesus and the Disinherited, wrote, “It cannot be denied that too often the weight of the Christian movement has been on the side of the strong and the powerful and against the weak and oppressed—this, despite the gospel.”

Jesus has always advocated for us to speak up for those who have no voice and seek justice for those who society has oppressed. Are you siding with the strong and powerful or with the dispossessed?

Prayer: Lord, help me use the power You’ve entrusted to me to care for those who have no voice.
