Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. Mark 6:34 NLT
Jesus recognized how draining it could be to meet the spiritual and physical needs of others, and so He modeled rest and restoration for His followers. However, He also responded to the needs of others with compassion, even when He had reached His human limits.
You will encounter many different needs and kinds of people each day, but are you aware of what motivates them? What drives people to act the way they do?
Today’s scripture shows that Jesus didn’t respond to people based on how exhausted He felt. Rather, He saw that the people seeking Him were desperate for direction. His compassion was rooted in His ability to identify with their inner struggles.
Are there opportunities for you to ask what’s motivating certain people or what’s behind their actions it could be that an angry person is driven by a deep wound from the past or a person who struggles to trust has been betrayed by someone who should have been reliable. Ministry can flow out of compassion and the act of relating to the stories of others.
Prayer: Jesus, give me eyes to see and ears to hear the stories and struggles of others. May I serve them with mercy and generosity even when I have grown weary.
