Jesus The Bread Of Life - Message #384 - November 20, 2005
Here is some food for thought. Our daily labor is tied up in making ends meet. We rise early and hit the sack late. We hardly have time to stop and smell the roses, to read a good book, or to reflect on the good things of life. We are too busy trying to make a living.
Jesus Christ says, "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you" (John 6:27).
Our response is simple. We must work. How else will we pay the rent or buy the groceries? When Jesus speaks of food which perishes, He uses the same word He mentions in John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." The emphasis is the same. There is food that spoils and rots. There is life that is rotten.
On television, the mother of a child who was ruthlessly murdered said of the killers, "I hope they rot in hell." They may. Hard words? Perhaps. Our neglect of eternal things in favor of food that perishes contributes to barbarous behavior.
What is the food that endures to eternal life? "Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst'" (John 6:35).
