The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! "This is He of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.' John 1:29-30 NKJV
In modern times, religious animal sacrifice seems cruel, even backward. But in Old Testament times, God required the sacrifice of valuable animals to atone for people’s sins. God’s requirement that the sacrifice be a perfect (and therefore most valuable) specimen reminded the people of two things: God wanted and deserved the very best and sin always came with great cost.
When John the Baptist saw Jesus approaching him, he made a first-time public declaration of Jesus’ true identity, calling Him “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
John understood that God had sent Jesus to earth to be the perfect sacrifice for our sin.
Jesus lived a perfectly sinless life here on earth (see Hebrews 4:15). But He would die a horrible, violent death so that we could be forgiven and then live forever with Him in heaven.
So take heart in knowing who Jesus really is—and thank Him every day…for what He along could do for you.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for being the perfect, sinless Lamb of God. Thank You for giving Your life for me.
