I've had really bad run ins with people who wanted to joke around about serious matters in the past. In French, the practice is called "cunylingus", which isn't merely a Triple X peep show practice (also illegal under state pornography statues). I knew a rather dull middle-aged man when I was in my late teens who was really desperate to "swing" before he turned forty, his favorite joke was "Where in the Bible does it mention baseball? In the big inning."
He was really just a product of his religious times, all told. He had been bottle fed formula sociology pastoring, in the avuncular style of people like Tony Campolo, and lived in a scruffy suburban house in an admittedly scruffy suburb of a city suffering from "urban decay". He was a playa, and the world is full of palyas. That's the problem with jokes. People have some trouble, I know that because I was enrolled in the required high school "careers exploration" seminar too, and I got handed all the same silly books about job search and public speaking skills as all the dumbed down people I went to those overpriced taxpayer funded schools with, the ones with the big picture windows and the slick new common core books on padding a resume, corporate head hunting, and silly joke overtures to break the ice at a company picnic or brush off a journalist's questions in your fantasy career as a dream politician.
There's just so much inappropriate media in the country. It's not only that yawl real serious theologians and voices crying in the wilderness to repent get drowned out, but also that playboy pastors who like to use that pop culture to the Bible segue (The Gospel according to Peanuts came first, then it was the Sopranos, and later it was the Dharma of Star Wars for the New Age Eastern people).
