Jungle Out There - August 07, 2006
Everyone has heard the expression, "it's a jungle out there!", and although I have never been in a jungle, today nature provided a glimpse of what I envisioned a jungle to be. This occurred in the neighborhood of "The Landings" on Skidaway Island, South Carolina. As I walked on the asphalt path, I looked to my immediate right and observed an area of land that had remained in its original natural state. I saw a dense thicket scattered with cabbage palms, Live Oak, Magnolia and palmetto trees. Moss hung from the limbs of these trees in various lengths, and the ground was covered with vines, saplings, poison ivy and many other plants I could not identify. The area was incredibly thick with growth. I wondered who in the world would ever venture in there. I felt that danger lurked in this thick foliage.
That is how our world can seem There are trees and bushes of vanity and career advancement to block our view of serenity. There are vines and shrubs which cause us to stumble or trip. We encounter poisons and thorns of lies, hate, mistrust and greed to pierce us and make us sick.
If we would step back and look at the picture of life, how could we go into everyday life unarmed? We cannot make it through the "jungle" of life without God. He will carve a path for us to follow. He will make a way, pointing a clear path as He gives us directions.
God gave us the Person of the Holy Spirit to indwell within us, so that we might be filled with His wisdom and knowledge. He also pronounced His profound and inner peace for us as we travel through life. We will not always avoid the hurts and sadness that occur here, but God promises to be with us for the entire trip, never leaving our side.
Thank you, dear Lord, for your promises. I claim them as the truth and am glad you gave them to us in the Bible.
