Knitting - June 19, 2006
It has been many years since I have done any knitting, and my expertise never exceeded knitting afghans or baby blankets. Purchasing the yarn is the first step and casting the stitches on the needles is the second. Then, each stitch is knitted from one needle to the other. The stitches interlock, forming a pattern of rows. When the item is complete, you cast off the stitches in a special way so the item won't unravel or come undone.
God has placed a small group of women in my life that remind me of knitting. We comprise our neighborhood prayer group. We meet once a week, and during this time we share praises, concerns, updates of previous prayer requests and we pray. Just as purchasing the yarn was first in knitting, so it is that Jesus purchased each of these women from sin. I believe God cast our group, one by one, onto His special knitting needle as He drew us together in a most special way to become useful to Him. He gathered us, each with our own personality traits and spiritual gifts, to share, encourage, and pray for each other and also for others in our lives.
Each week when we meet, I think those stitches of love are being knit together with every item we share. The knitting continues through the week as we pray, led by the Holy Spirit. We also have an outreach ministry, consisting of such things as visiting the elderly and sending appropriate cards to those in need. We host luncheons and outings, inviting neighbors to share in our joy. Recently, we added a sunshine fund. We contribute money monthly, and when we learn of a need, we have some money to help someone else.
The blanket of love we are knitting will be finished and bound by God, never to unravel, when Jesus returns and we are joined with Him forever. Until then, each of us will add our stitches as we are called by God to do so.
I would encourage each of you to belong to a small prayer group. God will show you amazing things through it.
