Does anyone have any personal experience with what to read in the Bible when you're trying to listen to Jesus a little bit more?

Some places are better than others. I would not neglect any part, but I would suggest reading from the 4 gospels and the Book of Psalms every day while also praying. Eventually as you make a habit reading and praying daily you should develop a way that the whole of the Bible gets read periodically. Ask God for help in that. I have a definite schedule of reading which includes the whole Bible, but doubles up on the gospels, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. By double up I mean I read each of theme twice as much as the rest of scripture. But even if you set up such a pattern don't be bound by it absolutely. Sometimes God may nudge to read someplace that is not according to schedule. Your Leader should always be the Holy Spirit. But... even letting the Holy Spirit always lead doesn't always happen just like that.

As you read, stop between phrases of verses or even words to listen for God. Sometimes there will seemingly be only silence, but at other times He may speak to you heart.

"To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven" Ecc 3:1
"...a time to keep silence, and a time to speak" Ecc 3:7
