We read in Romans 8:1-8 that God sent his own Son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of sinful flesh (God incarnate) as an offering for sin, in which he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For those who continue to walk (in conduct, in practice) in sin will die in their sins, even if by their lips they confess Jesus as Lord. For they, by their practices, are hostile toward God, and they cannot please God.
“However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
“So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:9-14 NASB’95)
There are many people today here in America who have this misconception that if they give a verbal confession of Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives, and if they claim that they believe in Jesus’ bodily resurrection, that they are now saved from their sins, all sins are forgiven, and they are guaranteed heaven when they die, regardless of how they live. And this is because they are believing these half-truth gospels taught from Scriptures out of context. And so they end up believing the lie and rejecting the truth.
For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).
By God-persuaded faith in Jesus Christ we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to God and to his righteousness, in walks of obedience to his commands. Thus, sin is to no longer be permitted by us to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).
So, if we are truly “in Christ,” by faith in Jesus Christ, it will result in us dying with Christ to sin, by the Spirit, and us being raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live according to the flesh, but now according to the Spirit. Thus, as followers of Jesus Christ we are under obligation to no longer live according to the flesh, but to now walk according to the Spirit. For if our lives are being ruled by the flesh, we will die in our sins, but if our lives are being ruled by the Spirit of God, then we will live.
For, it is not all who merely make professions of faith in Jesus Christ who are the children of God, but it is all who are being led by the Spirit of God. And the Holy Spirit is going to lead us to obey God, in practice, and to put our sins to death. For God’s grace, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for our Lord’s return (Titus 2:11-14). God’s grace is not free license to continue living in sin and to not obey God.

Lead Me Gently Home, Father
By Will L. Thompson, 1879
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
