[You], who have shown me great and severe troubles, Shall revive me again, And bring me up again from the depths of the earth. Psalm 71:20 NKJV
Some people see “life is hard…” and finish with “then you die.” Christians should read “life is hard…” and conclude, “but God is good.”
Troubles are inevitable and, as the psalmist notes, “many and bitter.” We slog through the “depths of the earth” due to Adam and Eve’s original sin as well as our own personal rebellion. Happily, the story doesn’t end there.
If we truly follow Jesus, God will restore our lives. There’s a good chance He’ll bring us up from the difficulties we face in this world. But if not, there’s a 100 percent chance He’ll make everything right in heaven.
Let’s be realistic about the world we live in. It’s broken by sin and filled with troubled people, and that affects even those of us who love and follow God. But He’s well aware of our trials (see the story of Job) and is working out every detail for our good (see the story of Joseph and Romans 8:28). Here’s how Jesus summarized the situation: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Prayer: Lord God, this life is hard…but You are good. Please keep my focus on You and what You’re accomplishing amid the trials.
