Remember the word to Your servant, Upon which You have caused me to hope. This [is] my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life. Psalm 119:49-50 NKJV

Over and over, David ties his confidence in God’s promises of protection and provision to his own obedience of God’s commands. Just to clarify, this is not a matter of securing our salvation but our only proper response to what God has done for us in Christ. We have been liberated from our tendency to obey out of fear of reprisal; now, we can do what God says because His love has freed us to love Him for who He is. And we learn more about Him by reading His Words.

Paul’s description of our triumph as believers in Romans 8:31, 33-35 is an example of words we can cling to for dear life:

What, then, are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? ... Who can bring an accusation against God's elect? God is the one who justifies. Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is the one who died, but even more, has been raised; he also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us. Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

Let God’s life-giving words soak into your soul, and you can face anything with grace and hope.

Prayer: Lord, I love the promises and power in Your words. Knowing You better gives me life.
