Todays Devotional - Saturday February 3rd - Choice
For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
Romans 6:14
Life is full of decisions from the moment we wake up. What to wear or eat? Which train to catch? When to read Living Light? And so on.
In Romans 6, Paul presents us with a series of deeper choices: Law or grace; sin or holiness; slavery or freedom; instruments of wickedness, or of righteousness? This week's reflections started with a question, 'Shall we go on sinning?' (6:1) Paul ends today with an emphatic response: 'Sin shall NOT be your master!' So does grace encourage sin? No, it does the opposite; it calls us to make a decision for holiness. Moses said to the Israelites, '… I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you … may live.' (Deuteronomy 30:19)
A German proverb states, 'When God says today, the devil says tomorrow.' When we put off making a choice, we've often voted by our unthinking behaviour.
Eleanor (1884-1962), the wife of President Franklin Roosevelt said, 'One's philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes. . . . In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.' So, what do you say? What is your responsibility to God? Whilst the law demanded obedience, the grace of Jesus supplies the power to obey. Which will you choose?
Prayer
Life-giving God, help me to make the right decisions today, in Jesus' name. Amen.
