Genesis 2:24 There a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
In today's world it seems many just don't understand what it means to really love let alone what real commitment is. But, if we look at the written word of God it is there we find the meaning as well as how to really love and commit to each other. In the above verse we see that when man and woman marry they are united and become one flesh. What this means is that they are no longer their own but belong to each other. What this means is that every decision in the marriage will be made together and as the vows state you will be together for the rest of your lives. These vows taken and spoken infront of our Lord Jesus as well as family and friends are more than mere words we speak..they speaking of our actions one will take during the course of their marriage. Let us take a deep look into the vows taken in a marriage ceremony.
I(insert name here)
Take you (insert name)
To be my lawfully wedded wife/husband
To have and to hold
from this day forward
For better, for worse
For richer or poorer
In sickness and health
To love and to cherish
For so Long as we both shall live(till death do us part)
These vows are talking about the decisions a man and woman will make during their marriage. I will stand by your side and fight for you and our marriage and never give up no matter what comes our way, no matter the circumstance together we will make it. The words " Till death do we part" say it all..not till hard times come and we feel like giving up, not till I don't love you anymore or feel to comfortable with you, but forever till the day we should be parted by death i'm in it for the long haul and will work at and fight for our relationship and marriage. Now lets take a look at the parts a man and woman play in the marraige. Men Let's look now at the part you play when you take on the role of husband, father..there are many things included in this role.
Ephesians 5:25-30 Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify, and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So, husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
What this above verse means to men is that their role of husband is likened to that of Jesus to His church. when you marry a woman you become to her a provider, spiritual leader, protector...you are to her in earthly form what Jesus has become and is to her and now He has entrusted this woman to you and now its up to you how you will treat her and the family you will raise together. A man according to the bible must be willing to work and support His wife and family. As spiritual leader it is the job of the husband/father to lead his family in the reading of the Bible and leading them in prayer and taking them the church...it is your responsibilty to teach them to follow Jesus.all eyes will be on you and your actions. Your children will look to you as an example of how to treat people around them for sons it will be you that shows them how to treat their future wives and how to be a good man and husband...this role should not be taken lightly, or walked into wihtout serious prayer and thought.
Ephesians 5: 22-24 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord . For the husband is head of the wife as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore , just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
Now women there is a role for you to play too and that role is that of homemaker...as your husband works to support you and the children you may have one day,you will be taking care of those children, the house and doing all the things to keep that house running. Things such as laundry, cooking, cleaning, doing the dishes, taking care of and meeting the needs of your husband children and along side your husband will lead your family in reading the word of God, praying and getting them to church and Teaching to follow Jesus...all eyes will be on you as well and your daughters will learn how to be a Godly women and when it is time for them to marry they will know how to love her husband because you have been that example to her. As with the role of husband the role of wife should not be entered into lightly but with serious prayer and thought.
Remember each role a husband and wife plays in the marriage is just as important as the other..noone is less than the other...it takes both husband and wife to make the marriage work. Together as a unit you come together to care for and raise your children, and to take care of and care for each other. Love each other, respect each other and communicate openly with one another sharing what is on your heart, helping one another in all things and yes come together to please one another as husband and wife should...submitting one to another...you belong to each other now and are indeed one flesh united by God and the love you should have for one another should be as Jesus love for us is...He laid down His life for us...are you ready to lay down your lives for each other and for the families you may have one day?
Take your marriage vows seriously and remember they are more than just words...they are the commitment you make and the actions you will take for the rest of your earthly lives together...marraige is work and you must build your marriage on the foundation that is Jesus Christ and then working with Him and with each other you can overcome anything or any storm that comes your way. God Bless all of you that are married and reading this...May God strengthen and deepen your relationship with Him and with your spouse and to those who want to be married or maybe engaged to be married...seek God first and prayerfully consider whether you are ready to make the long life commitment of marriage. Let your Father in Heaven guide and lead your hearts in all things.
I want to add that in submitting to one another that does not mean anyone has the right to abuse one another...this is not what submitting is...its coming together in agreement with one another in respect for one another in any decision you will make as a couple...God did not intend for anyone to suffer abuse whether it be physical, mental, emotional...this is not submitance and is unacceptable...love each other and respect each other putting each others's well being ahead of yourself...that is love and in doing this you are submitting to the maker of heaven and earth..the very one that first redeemed you then brought you together...Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
