“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” (John 3:19-21 NASB1995)
Now, this is in the context of John 3:16, which is a very popular salvation Scripture verse often taught out of context and made to say what it does not say if taught in the appropriate context. For the word “love” has a meaning to it, as does the word “believe” which also has a verb tense of “believing,” which is something that is ongoing and active. And we need to know who the Son of God was/is, and what he taught, and what he did. And then we will have the whole picture of what John 3:16 is teaching, in its proper context.
And John 3:19-21 gives us some insight into the message behind John 3:16. For belief (faith) in Jesus Christ is not something we do once in our lives and now all our sins are forgiven and heaven is now guaranteed us when we die, but regardless of how we live, and regardless of what the rest of the Bible teaches on this subject. For the word “faith” (or belief) means “to be persuaded,” and it is God who persuades us to deny self, die with him to sin, not just once, but daily, and to walk in obedience to his commands.
And God’s love for us is agape love, which prefers what God prefers, which is what is holy, righteous, godly, morally pure, upright, honest, faithful, and obedient to God and to his New Covenant commands. So if we love God, we will die with Christ to sin and we will now walk with our Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, in holy living, by the grace of God and in the power of God. We will not be those who are continuing in deliberate and habitual sin against God thinking that God will not judge us for our sins.
For Jesus Christ did not take our sins upon himself when he died on that cross merely to forgive us our sins and to promise us heaven when we die. For Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, who is God, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – put our sins to death with him on that cross, and was resurrected from the dead, so that we will now die with him to sin and walk with him in walks of obedience to his commands in holy living, to the glory and praise of God, by God’s grace.
But many people in this world of ours, including many who have professed faith in Jesus Christ, love (prefer) the darkness (their sins) rather than the Light (Jesus Christ, the gospel, truth, and righteousness), and so they have not died with Christ to sin, but they are still making sin their practice. And obedience to God and to his New Covenant commands is not their practice. And so many of them have adopted an altered and diluted gospel message which permits them to remain living in sin while promising them heaven.
But they are believing a lie which comes straight from hell. For if our sin is what we prefer, and so it is what we hold on to, it means that we hate Jesus Christ and his gospel message and God the Father and the Holy Spirit, because we love our sins more, or we love our sins in place of loving and serving the Lord Jesus with our lives, in reality. And so all who do this have refused to come to genuine faith in the Lord Jesus for they don’t want their sins exposed, and they don’t want to have to die to sin and obey God.
But we who have come to the Light, i.e. to genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ, we have admitted our sins, and we have died with Christ to our sins, and we are now walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in practice. And this doesn’t make us perfect or mean that we will never sin again (1 John 2:1-2), but that sin is no longer what we practice, in lifestyle, if we are walking by faith in Jesus Christ and not according to the flesh. So, if we fall back into sin, we must turn from our sin and renew obeying God.
For all who make sin their practice, and not obedience to God, will not inherit eternal life with God, regardless of what faith they profess with their lips.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
