Verse 26 seems to contradict the main teaching of the Bible as we should love our neighbor as ourselves. yet he is telling us if we don't hate are mother and father we can not be his disciple. I think maybe the true meaning was lost in the translation perhaps, would love to hear other comments

thanks

The Cost of Discipleship
(Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; John 6:59–66)

25 Large crowds were now traveling with Jesus, and He turned and said to them,
26 If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be My disciple.
27 And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.

28 Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?
29 Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
30 saying, ‘This man could not finish what he started to build.’

31 Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
32. And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.

33 In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.

I wonder if there is a difference between "hate" and "love less". If so, then we need to examine our lives and see if there's anything we love more than Jesus.
Not just in words, but in actions. ... If you love me, you will....

Deut 13:3; you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

I have always found this verse in this paragraph on - the cost of discipleship - straightforward ...
when a person hears the true and full gospel of salvation and is converted then they must love God (the Father and the Son) and love their salvation.
However, as we all know, many family members do not rejoice when a person is baptized in water and Spirit and challenge this person over their new found faith.
All kinds of family blackmail are employed against such a convert to turn them away from the true gospel and back to their previous state that the family approves of.
This is unfortunately true (and often a matter of life and death) in countries where there is a predominant national religion or denomination.
A new disciple in Christ must love and rejoice in their salvation more than they "love" and respect the customary expectations of family honour and inclusion.
Matthew 5:11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."

Luke 12:52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three.
53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and
daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Jesus often used extreme exaggeration to make a strong point - threading camels through needles, plucking out eyes etc.

Here the thought is: your devotion to Jesus must be so deep, total and wholehearted that by comparison your love for your own mother will look like hatred.

When anyone Finds that they love their family more than they love God that is proof that they do not love God. The love of God inside a person produces a love for God that exceeds the love for anyone else. To be able to love other people requires the love for God to be number one which is where love streams from. The Lord God put us first in that while we were sinners Jesus died for us. God spared not his only Son but delivered him up for us all. We love Him because He first loved us. The source of all life comes from the one who gives life. The love of God will control those who have the love for God in them.

Matthew 10:34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household.
37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Ever since I became converted and born from above > a Pentecostal Christian speaking in tongues > my life was immediately transformed from
my old previous wicked and criminal life to being free from all addictions and wicked habits.
But instead of rejoicing in my new found salvation and liberty my sisters and mother keep their distance and have pretty well cut me off from
all family, including my nieces and nephews, and from family events such as birthdays and marriages.
Thankfully I love Jesus and the gospel more than I love my family - as none of my family can ensure my salvation.

@Waggles hit the nail on the head. The context of hating parents is only when they shun you for being a Christian.

Mar 10:29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,
Mar 10:30 will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life. (NLT)

always putting God first (love more) reaps huge benefits.

Mat 10:37 “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. (NLT)

Psa 26:5 I hate the gatherings of those who do evil, and I refuse to join in with the wicked.

Psa 31:6 I hate those who worship worthless idols. I trust in the LORD.

Psa 119:113 Samekh I hate those with divided loyalties, but I love your instructions.
